Three Announcements for Three Different Classic Experiences
BlizzCon 2023 announced Season of Discovery, a Self-Found option for Classic Hardcore, and Cataclysm Classic for the progression realms. These were different directions within WoW Classic, with different characters, rules and release schedules.
This is a historical recap of those November 2023 announcements. The follow-up dates below show when the announced features arrived; they are not upcoming launch dates. Blizzard’s official What’s Next panel recap is the reference for what the team presented at the event.
| Classic experience | What BlizzCon announced | Confirmed release milestone |
|---|---|---|
| Season of Discovery | A new season with discoveries, Rune Engraving and level-banded phases. | November 30, 2023 launch; initial level cap 25. |
| Classic Hardcore | Self-Found: an additional restriction on player-to-player economic help. | February 29, 2024. |
| Progression realms | The journey from Wrath of the Lich King Classic into Cataclysm Classic. | Pre-expansion patch April 30; expansion May 20, 2024. |
Season of Discovery Changed What Low-Level Characters Could Do
Blizzard’s Season of Discovery announcement introduced a level-25 starting phase, hidden discoveries and abilities that could change familiar class roles. Tanking Warlocks and healing Mages were two examples used to explain that approach.
The official name was Season of Discovery. “Classic+” was a community description of the kind of experience some players wanted, rather than the title Blizzard announced for a separate product.
Rune Engraving sat alongside the talent system
The panel described runes as abilities applied to equipment, with chest, legs and hands as the three initial engraving slots. Finding a rune and deciding how to combine its ability with a character’s existing kit added another layer to building a class. More slots were planned as the level cap rose.
Blackfathom Deeps became the first endgame raid
At level 25, the redesigned 10-player Blackfathom Deeps was the season’s first raid destination. Its new encounters and rewards gave players a group objective before reaching Classic’s usual level-60 endgame. The image at the top of this article shows Blackfathom Deeps.
The level bands were central to the proposal: players would spend time building characters and tackling content at an intermediate cap before the next phase opened. The initial 10-player raid did not establish a permanent size for every later Season of Discovery raid.
Blizzard also said there would be no public beta or PTR before the season began, preserving the opening discoveries for launch. For what followed the initial phase, see our 2024 Season of Discovery phase dates, level caps and raids.
Hardcore Self-Found Restricted Economic Assistance
BlizzCon placed the Self-Found option in early 2024. Blizzard subsequently confirmed February 29, 2024 in its February 20 weekly update.
The announced rules began with a level-1 character and restricted mail to or from other players, buying or selling on the Auction House, and trading items or enchantments. That changed how a character obtained supplies and equipment: resources normally acquired through another player had to come from the character’s own progression.
This was an option within Classic Hardcore, separate from Season of Discovery’s class experiments and level-band raids. Its defining addition was the economic restriction, alongside the existing Hardcore challenge.
Cataclysm Continued the Progression-Realm Journey
The expansion announcement concerned the realms progressing through WoW’s expansion history. At BlizzCon 2023, that journey was in Wrath of the Lich King Classic and Icecrown Citadel; Cataclysm Classic was its announced next destination.
Blizzard’s later Cataclysm release schedule separated two milestones. The April 30, 2024 pre-expansion patch brought the changed level-1–60 world and features including Goblins, Worgen, Archaeology, Reforging and transmogrification. The May 20 expansion launch opened level-80–85 progression. Those dates answer different questions; the pre-patch was not the start of leveling to 85.
Read together, the announcements offered a useful distinction: Season of Discovery experimented with Classic classes and phased progression, Self-Found added a constraint to Hardcore, and Cataclysm advanced the expansion-era realms. Choosing between them meant choosing a ruleset and progression path, rather than assuming every Classic character would receive all three changes.
