The November 2023 Rune-Slot Datamine
On November 9, 2023, Archimtiros reported nine rune-engraving helper entries in Classic patch 1.15 build 52124. The original Wowhead report documented data ahead of Season of Discovery's launch.
Those entries were evidence of equipment categories referenced in that build. They did not establish a permanent nine-slot limit, a complete release schedule or a promise that every listed category would be available during the first level bracket.
Nine Equipment Helpers Were Not Nine Named Rune Powers
The reported categories were chest, legs, hands, bracer, cloak, feet, helm, shoulder and waist. Their generic activation descriptions identified the equipment slot, rather than revealing a distinct named ability for each row.
A helper entry and a class rune answer different questions: the helper concerns where an engraving can be applied, while the class rune defines the effect you choose. The generic helper text does not specify which class rune to find or what that rune does.
The shared Classic PTR also contained data associated with the seasonal project. That alone did not mean players had public access to a complete, playable Season of Discovery test.
What Blizzard Subsequently Released Through Phase 4
The published rollout shows why the early snapshot needed a date. These are the initial equipment-slot milestones, rather than a complete inventory of every later rune ability.
| Release checkpoint | Verified rune-slot additions |
|---|---|
| Original level-25 phase | Chest, legs and hands. |
| Phase 2 | Waist and feet: the official preview's Eclipse tooltip names a belt, and King of the Jungle names boots. |
| Phase 3 | Helm and bracers. |
| Phase 4 | Cloak, plus ring slots for class-agnostic utility runes. |
In particular, Phase 4's official ring utility slots superseded any reading of the November report as proof that rings could never receive runes. An absent category in an early build describes the evidence available then, not every future design decision.
How to Read an Old Rune Report When Planning a Character
First identify the game branch and phase. Season of Discovery's engraving system is a specific seasonal feature; a Classic-era item slot is not, by itself, evidence that the same rune system exists on every Classic realm.
Then separate slot availability from a particular rune's requirements. A released slot does not tell you the discovery route, class restriction or final tuning of every rune that can occupy it.
Finally, keep datamined categories separate from confirmed release notes. For example, a shoulder helper's presence in the early list did not establish its release phase. The dated report is useful history; published phase information is the better reference for what a specific phase actually introduced.
