Shadowmourne's Wrath Classic Quest Route
Shadowmourne is a legendary two-handed axe earned through an Icecrown Citadel quest chain. This guide follows Wrath of the Lich King Classic's 2023–24 version, including its dated shard changes. Retail quest requirements and later event rules should not be substituted for this route.
Blizzard's Wrath Classic introduction identifies Death Knights, Paladins and Warriors as eligible. Reach Friendly with The Ashen Verdict, then speak to Highlord Darion Mograine inside Icecrown Citadel to begin The Sacred and the Corrupt.
Gather the Materials Before Planning the Infusions
The opening WotLK quest record requires all four material types. Recover Light's Vengeance from Frostmourne Cavern; the two boss bloods require 25-player ICC.

Patch 3.4.3 added Primordial Saronite access through Defiler's Scourgestones from Gamma dungeons, alongside Emblems of Frost. Those currency routes concern Saronite; they do not replace the boss bloods or purchase the completed legendary.
Follow the Nine Core Quests in Order
The axe is awarded before the final Lich King objective. Keeping the forging, infusion and collection stages separate helps a raid plan who needs a specific boss mechanic.
- The Sacred and the Corrupt. Deliver the four material types for Mograine's runeforge.
- Shadow's Edge. Complete the forging step to receive the weapon used throughout the following tasks.
- A Feast of Souls. Use Shadow's Edge to collect 1,000 souls from the Lich King's minions inside ICC. Both 10- and 25-player raids count for this stage. The much smaller requirement shown in Retail data is not the WotLK Classic requirement.
- Unholy Infusion. Complete Putricide's infusion objective and defeat him in 25-player ICC.
- Blood Infusion. Complete Lana'thel's bite sequence and defeat her in 25-player ICC.
- Frost Infusion. Survive Sindragosa's required breaths and defeat her in 25-player ICC.
- The Splintered Throne. Collect 50 Shadowfrost Shards from 25-player ICC.
- Shadowmourne… Bring Shadow's Edge to Mograine and receive Shadowmourne as the quest reward.
- The Lich King's Last Stand. Complete Mograine's closing objective by killing the Lich King. The axe itself is not a random drop from that kill.
After forging Shadow's Edge, arrange the three infusion encounters with the raid before moving on to the shard collection stage.
Coordinate Each Infusion Before the Pull
Putricide: Arrange the Abomination Role
Unholy Infusion requires the mutated-slime infusion followed by Putricide's death in 25-player mode. Plan who controls the abomination and when the quest holder performs the infusion.
The WotLK Shadow Infusion spell record lists a 100-Energy cost, four-second cast and six-minute infused effect. Arrange the energy and timing with the raid so the boss dies while the required effect is active.
Lana'thel: The Quest Holder Must Perform Three Bites
For Blood Infusion, wield Shadow's Edge, receive Blood Mirror, undergo Frenzied Bloodthirst and feed the blade three times before killing Lana'thel in 25-player mode. Organize the quest holder's three outgoing bites; being bitten three times is not the objective.
Sindragosa: Survive Four Breath Attacks
Frost Infusion requires surviving four breath attacks while wielding Shadow's Edge, then killing Sindragosa in 25-player mode without dying during the required sequence. Agree on positioning, defensive support and healing before attempting it.
Shadowfrost Shards Had Two Different Historical Rules
Blizzard changed the collection pace during Wrath Classic. The start date and end boundary matter when interpreting an old raid report or guide.

The official patch notes removed the requirement for someone in the raid to have reached The Splintered Throne before shards could drop. They also matched 25-player Normal's drop rates to 25-player Heroic's.
Saurfang, Putricide, Lana'thel, Sindragosa and the Lich King each guaranteed one shard on either 25-player difficulty. Removing a raid's drop prerequisite did not remove a character's personal quest requirements or guarantee every participant a shard.

Blizzard's later announcement made every 25-player Normal/Heroic boss guarantee one shard, with end-wing bosses and the Lich King guaranteeing two. The stated duration ran through the end of the Cataclysm Classic prepatch period. It was a temporary historical rule, not a permanent promise for every version of ICC.
A raid's drops and one character's allocation are different quantities. Group distribution and lockout planning affect personal progress, so a fixed number of weeks cannot be guaranteed from the drop rules alone.
The Keepsake Rewards Are a Separate Epilogue
The Sealed Chest starts a follow-up quest. Personal Property takes it to Mograine for the Unsealed Chest. Its keepsake exchanges include the Crimson Deathcharger, Jaina's Locket, Muradin's Favor, Sylvanas's Music Box and Tabard of the Lightbringer.
Those follow-ups are separate from receiving the axe. Do not assume that every raid member automatically receives the chest or all its rewards.
