Aggrend on the Itemization Process
In spring 2024, during WoW Classic Season of Discovery Phase 3, Blizzard applied late-stage itemization adjustments to Phase 3 items, including the PvP sets. Senior Game Producer Aggrend shared context on the process at the time. Item design in Classic WoW was handled manually rather than procedurally, meaning adjustments and refinements were made throughout development, sometimes as last-minute hotfixes. These changes were not always reflected in datamining results, which meant BiS lists and external item databases could contain outdated stat values.
Aggrend also noted that not every item was intended to be perfectly optimized. The deliberate design goal was to leave some items as "so-so" while others stood out as genuinely exceptional, preserving the classic feel of valuable, sought-after gear.
Add-ons or scripts that scraped the in-game API or linked to the item database generally provided accurate information, though the most recent PvP set adjustments were not yet reflected in the client at the time of this hotfix.
