The Dishonorable Kill Exploit

In September 2023, Blizzard addressed an exploit on WoW Classic Era realms that let players abuse Dishonorable Kills for faster rank progression. Players at higher ranks were intentionally killing civilian NPCs to earn DHKs, temporarily dropping themselves below their rank threshold. By falling into a lower rank bucket, they gained credit for that entire bucket on the next weekly reset — progressing faster than players who stayed above the threshold legitimately.

Player Xfour captured the problem directly on the forums: "It would benefit my rogue to kill a poor civilian, this seems wrong." Blizzard confirmed the issue and announced a fix via a blue post on September 8, 2023.

The Fix

Starting with the weekly reset on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the PvP calculation changed: instead of awarding credit for an entire rank bucket, players now only receive points up to the amount they are missing from the next rank threshold. Deliberately downranking through DHKs no longer provides a progression advantage. Blizzard also confirmed the change applied to kills already committed during that same week.

Alterac Valley Honor Bug

Alongside the DHK fix, Blizzard resolved a separate issue: the Honor reward for Alterac Valley marks turn-in quests had been unintentionally doubled. The fix restored the reward to its intended value. Both changes were limited to Classic Era realms — the rank 1–14 honor system operates only on vanilla Classic Era servers, not in Season of Discovery or retail WoW.

Impact on the Classic Era Rank Ladder

Both fixes restored expected behavior to the Classic Era PvP ladder. The rank system decays weekly based on relative honor contribution, rewarding sustained competitive play. Players who had been exploiting the DHK downranking window lost that shortcut from the September 12 reset onward.
