Unlock the Recipes Through Waking the Nightmare
Season of Discovery’s Phase 3 crafting chain ends with Waking the Nightmare, an Inert Mantle of Nightmares and recipe training from the Shadowy Figure in Moonglade. Getting there requires an Ashenvale incursion visit, exploration inside Sunken Temple and a detour through Booty Bay to recover a pair of bracers.
This guide covers the chain introduced in April 2024 for Nightmare equipment. The quest order is checked against the game’s quest records; the travel landmarks are also documented in Passion’s April 2024 Wowhead walkthrough.
Prepare for the Level Gate and the Temple Visit
Plan to finish on a level-50 character. Early steps such as Itharius and Going Under allow level 40, but Return to Moonglade requires level 50. Starting the chain early does not remove that later requirement.
Have at least 250 skill in the relevant crafting profession when you return for training. Arrange your Sunken Temple exploration while Going Under is in your quest log, and leave bag space for the quest items. The final hunt also calls for allies; it is a separate objective from the temple exploration.
Follow the Quest and Item Handoffs in Order
- Trigger the Ashenvale discovery. Enter the Ashenvale Nightmare Incursion and travel south of the dream’s Warsong Lumber Camp until you receive Aura of Paralyzing Dread. Leave the dream and speak through Field Captain Hannalah’s new dialogue to obtain An Amalagamation of Nightmares. This opening discovery is not the final kill objective.
- Visit Loganaar, then Itharius. Deliver Hannalah’s quest to Loganaar in Moonglade. His follow-up, Itharius, sends you to the green dragon’s cave in southwestern Swamp of Sorrows. Pick up Going Under there.
- Explore Sunken Temple with Going Under active. Progress inside the raid to the Lair of the Chosen and check that the exploration objective has completed. Return to Itharius in Swamp of Sorrows, then take Return to Moonglade back to Loganaar.
- Listen to the Shadowy Figure. After the Moonglade hand-in, speak to the Shadowy Figure near Loganaar. Complete the conversation for A Fortuitous Turn of Events and accept The Bad News….
- Find the Injured Gnome in Booty Bay. Speak to him in the Salty Sailor Tavern to pick up The Lost Vambraces. Keep The Bad News… active: its item objective continues beyond this conversation.
- Recover the decharged bracers on Jaguero Isle. Travel to the island east of southern Stranglethorn Vale. Find the Itty Bitty Murloc on its eastern side and investigate the small burrow beside him to complete The Lost Vambraces. The reward is Decharged Void-Powered Vambraces.
- Return the bracers to Moonglade. Hand in The Bad News… to the Shadowy Figure. The reward is the charged Void-Powered Vambraces. Accept Waking the Nightmare before leaving.
- Equip the charged bracers and defeat the Nightmare Amalgamation. Return through Ashenvale’s Bough Shadow portal to the nightmare creature’s area with your allies. Wear the Void-Powered Vambraces for their protection and loot the Mantle of Nightmares after the kill.
- Return to the Shadowy Figure for the unlock. Turn in Waking the Nightmare in Moonglade. You receive the Inert Mantle of Nightmares. Speak to the figure again to learn the recipes offered for your qualifying profession.
The three bracer states matter: Decharged Void-Powered Vambraces are the recovered quest item; Void-Powered Vambraces are the charged, equippable reward; the profession-crafted epic vambraces come afterward. Similarly, the Mantle of Nightmares looted from the creature becomes the Inert Mantle through the final quest hand-in.
What the Different Professions Gain
The unlock serves several crafting professions. Choose a recipe for your character’s armor, role and profession before committing the mantle and other materials. These are the main reward groups:
| Profession | Nightmare recipe group | Example or crafting distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Tailoring | Cloth shoulders | Mantle of Insanity, Shoulderpads of the Deranged and Fractured Mind Pauldrons. |
| Leatherworking | Leather and mail shoulders | Examples include Paranoia Mantle, Shoulderpads of Obsession and Shrieking Spaulders. |
| Blacksmithing | Plate shoulders | Shoulderplates of Dread, Fearmonger’s Shoulderguards and Baleful Pauldrons. |
| Engineering | Epic Void-Powered vambraces | Invoker’s, Slayer’s and Protector’s variants; the quest’s charged bracers are also a crafting reagent. |
| Enchanting | Enchanted Sigil: Living Dreams | A profession consumable with its own reagent list. |
| Alchemy | Nightmare flasks and Flask of Nightmarish Mojo | Restless Dreams and Everlasting Nightmares differ from the Mojo used for shoulder-enchant exchanges. |
Plan the Craft After You Have Learned the Recipe
Your first Inert Mantle of Nightmares is the quest reward. Additional mantles are sold by Rix Xizzix in Booty Bay for 10 gold each. The mantle is Unique and binds when picked up, so plan to use the one you hold before buying another.
Nightmare Seeds are another important reagent, with Sunken Temple enemies as a source and Auction House trading available. Check the exact recipe: many equipment crafts combine a mantle and seeds with profession-specific materials, while other recipes have a different bill of materials.
For example, the game’s Flask of Nightmarish Mojo recipe uses five Nightmare Seeds, five Flasks of Atal’ai Mojo and one Crystal Vial. It does not use an Inert Mantle. That flask can be exchanged through Signets of the Lost Temple for a choice of shoulder enchant.
Read the finished item’s conditions as well as its base stats. For instance, Shrieking Spaulders restricts its attack-power proc to areas under the influence of the Nightmare. Treating every special effect as an always-on bonus can lead to the wrong crafting choice.
If Your Next Step Is Missing
Use the last completed hand-in to locate your next action. If you are below 50 after Going Under, check the Return to Moonglade level gate. If The Bad News… remains incomplete, check for the decharged bracers from The Lost Vambraces and return to the Shadowy Figure. If the final hunt still shows the mantle objective, check that you looted the creature.
Before making another long trip, read the active quest’s objective and inventory item name together. The recovered, charged, crafted and inert versions belong to different stages, and reaching the right place with the wrong stage active will not finish the chain.
