Rogue Runes and Locations - WoW SoD

Rogue Runes and Locations - WoW SoD

Explore the new Rune Engravings feature in WoW's Season of Discovery, focusing on Rogues. This blog provides a detailed guide on finding and unlocking the powerful Rogue Runes.

Key Takeaways

  • Rune Engravings are Season of Discovery's core progression mechanic — each gear slot (gloves, pants, chest, belt, boots) holds one active rune that unlocks new or enhanced abilities for your class.
  • Shadowstrike (Pants) is the cornerstone Subtlety rune, merging Hemorrhage's debuff with Shadowstep's gap-closer into a single 30-energy ability.
  • Between the Eyes (Gloves) adds a guaranteed 5-second Stun on a Pistol Shot, making it the strongest PvP opener rune for Rogues.
  • Deadly Brew (Chest) requires a solo run through Shadowfang Keep at level 20+ and applies free Wound Poison on all attacks, enabling full poison stacking without dedicating a weapon enchant.
  • Shadowstep (Belt) is gated behind a level-30 questchain that starts in your mailbox and winds through Scarlet Monastery and Silverpine Forest.
  • Waylay (Boots) requires collecting 7 Dalaran Relics from Dark Riders hidden in six different zones — start with Ariden's Sigil from the Dalaran Agent in Deadwind Pass.
  • Most early rune unlock methods are race-specific; check your race's path before traveling to another faction's starting area.

The unlock routes for each rune depend on your race, your level, and your willingness to solo-stealth a dungeon or two.

What Are Rune Engravings in Season of Discovery?

The most prominent feature of the Season of Discovery is the introduction of Rune Engravings, a game-changer for your gear. Rune Engravings don't just offer new abilities; they allow you to augment your current spells and even unlock entirely new possibilities for your class.

✏️ Tip: Each gear slot accepts exactly one rune. There is no cooldown on swapping runes between slots, so you can respecialise between PvE and PvP builds by switching your gloves and pants runes outside of combat.

Extra Skills and Improvements

Starting in Phase 2 of the Season of Discovery, all classes can find extra base skills and quality of life improvements. These are available in consumable items scattered around the world. While these items aren't classified as Runes, discovering and learning them is essential for players seeking to maximise the potential of their class.

Rogues can currently obtain:

Manual of Redirect — dropped from Interrogator Vishas in Scarlet Monastery: Graveyard.

How to Find and Unlock Rogue Runes

Unlocking these Runes isn't confined to specific races, though they are most commonly associated with races from the areas where the Runes are found. This means that even if you're playing a character from a different race or faction, you can still unlock these Runes by following the necessary steps.

📌 Common mistake: Many Rogue players assume all runes share the same unlock method across races. They don't — Between the Eyes, Blade Dance, and Mutilate all have entirely different quest chains depending on your starting race. Check your race's unlock method before setting out — each rune has a different race-specific path.

The process of unlocking each Rune is unique and tied to specific locations and actions within the game. Here is a guide to locating and unlocking the Rogue Runes:

As a Dwarf, this Rune can be found in a chest in the frost troll cave in Coldridge Valley. The chest can be found towards the back of the cave just below the ledge where Grik'nir spawns.

As a Night Elf, this can be found on the roof above the inn inside of Shadowglen.

As an Orc or a Troll, Rogue Shadowstrike is a reward from the quest Atop the Cliffs, which will have you jump onto nearby cliffs. It is mere feet from your initial spawn point in the Valley of Trials.

As an Undead, you will be tasked with killing/pickpocketing Scarlet Converts which will drop the rune.

Saber SlashPants

As Alliance, this can be found in Loch Modan, Darkshore and Westfall. In Loch Modan, this Rune can be looted from a toolbox found near the Dwarf NPCs located towards the middle of the Stonewrought Dam which is located at the very north of the Loch. In Darkshore, this Rune can be looted from a small pile of dirt you can find beneath the tree near the lighthouse in Auburdine. In Westfall, on the hill directly behind the Sentinel Hill Inn, there is an Elite Defias Scout with an Escape Plan buff, which will cause them to flee if you get too close. Use Stealth to avoid detection and Pickpocket Defias Scout and this will reward you with this Rune.

As Horde, this Rune can be found in both the Barrens and Silverpine Forest. In The Barrens, head over to Northwatch Hold, when you pass the main gate, look to your left; you will see a stable with a chest on the roof. You will have to complete a small jumping puzzle to get your Rune. Go around to the right and jump down onto the wall behind the stable. Once there, you can jump to the roof and loot the chest for the Rune. You will need 80 Lockpicking skill to open this chest. In Silverpine Forest, go to the entrance of Shadowfang Keep and use Sprint to jump to this small platform at 45.3, 67.3. You will need some kind of movement speed bonus to make the jump.

Main GauchePants

This Rune can be purchased from Grizzby in Ratchet. In order to unlock Grizzby as a vendor you must be level 20 and complete a series of tasks to earn his favor. There are three quests to complete, these can be completed in any order.

For the first you must provide him with 24 Fish Oil.

The second you must deliver him 20 Dark Iron Ordinances which drop from Dark Iron Dwarves in northern Wetlands or Southern Arathi Highlands.

The third you must deliver 16 Shredder Turbochargers which can only be acquired from Shredder NPCs using the Shredder Autosalvage Unit.

ShivPantsAs either faction, pickpocket a Defias Night Runner located on the farm directly south of The Twilight Grove until you find an Engraved Gold Ring, equip the ring and head to Raven Hill — there will be a statue in the center of the courtyard; /Kneel in front of it and you will be able to loot the Rune.
Deadly BrewChest

As any race, upon reaching level 20 you will receive a letter in the mail that will instruct you to go to Pyrewood Village in Silverpine Forest. Next to the ramp leading to Shadowfang Keep you will find a hut with a chest inside; opening the chest will begin The Horn of Xelthos quest.

This quest will have you go to find Veenix who is located in the western part of the Windshear Crag in Stonetalon Mountains. He will ask you for a work order, which can be pickpocketed or looted from Venture Co. Operators to obtain. When you return the Venture Co. Work Order to Veenix, he will give you the Breaching Charge needed for the next part of the quest. Next, head back to Shadowfang Keep and enter the dungeon alone — you must enter solo in order for the rare elites you need to spawn. With the Breaching Charge you can open the gate straight ahead of you when you enter the dungeon, allowing you access to the entire instance without having to kill the first boss. You will need to stealth around the dungeon and pickpocket the two rare elites, Gemela and Gefell, for the Sister's Half-Key and Brother's Half-Key. Make sure to be careful, as there are many areas in the instance where the halls are filled with mobs so navigating without being pulled out of stealth can be quite difficult. When you have both halves, find a safe spot to create the Twin Key — this action will pull you out of stealth. Head back to the stables found in the courtyard near to the entrance and use the key on the chest found there and inside you will find the horn. Exit the instance and return to the original hut where you can turn in the quest. After re-entering a major city you'll receive a mail which prompts you to head back to the same hut where you will finally be able to receive the Rune.

As an Orc or a Troll, it will be found inside a chest in Durotar at Drygulch Ravine.

Poisoned KnifeBelt

Head to Desolace to start the Highway Robbery quest at the extinguished Campfire (found at 47, 54). This quest will task you with finding someone who knows about the pillaged campsite — head to Bibbly F'utzbuckle who you can turn in the Highway Robbery quest to and he will begin your second part of this quest, On the Lam (Bibbly can be found at 63, 39 near Kormek's hut).

Head to the Inn in Booty Bay where you will be able to turn in On the Lam to Tokal who can be found on the first floor of the inn. She will offer you the quest Cherry for your Thoughts? You will need to buy her a Cherry Grog and then she will give you the next part of your quest, No Honor Among Thieves.

Next you will be heading to the Arathi Highlands to find a rowboat along the southern coast just east of the demolition camp where Dark Iron Dwarves are set up, right when you walk across Thandol Span to your east. The boat will teleport you to where you can find Illari Duskfeather; upon killing her she will drop Illari's Key that you need to open the Jewel-Encrusted Box you have been carrying throughout these quests. Open the box and you will find the Psychosophic Epiphany that teaches you the Rune.

ShadowstepBelt

Upon reaching level 30 you will receive a mail that will task you with heading to Pyrewood Village in Silverpine (found at 47.1, 71.1). Loot the chest and it will begin the quest The Eye of Bhossca. The first step is finding a disguise to enter Scarlet Monastery; this disguise can be found in a box in the stables found a bit to the west of Scarlet Monastery but still within the rocky ridge.

With your disguise active, head into the Graveyard wing of Scarlet Monastery and pickpocket a Scarlet Scryer found inside for their Scryer's Key. Then head over to the Library and in the hallway leading up to the final boss you will see a box on the eastern wall you can interact with — loot it, then head back to the Graveyard. Inside the Graveyard courtyard you will see two benches directly across from each other on the northern and southern sides. Type /sit and then walk across to the other bench and repeat the process. The correct sequence registers as a chat emote: 'You hear a faint click' should appear each time you sit on the benches. A chest will spawn just to the west of the northern bench.

Open the newly spawned chest and head back to the Library — in the Gallery of Treasures a side room will contain another new chest. Open this final chest containing the Eye of Bhossca, then return to the Dead Drop in Silverpine Forest and turn in the quest. Check your mail in a major city for the final letter; one last return to the Pyrewood Village Dead Drop awards the rune.

Shuriken TossBeltHead to the Swamp of Sorrows. You will find a trap attached to a tree almost directly north of Stonard at (42, 30). Once you have found this trap, cast Disarm Trap on it and you will be awarded with this Rune.
Master of SubtletyBoots

Head to the Kurzen camp in northern Stranglethorn Vale (around 44.8, 8.6); once there enter the large stone tower. Inside you will find Wendel Mathers inside a cage — talk with him and he will begin your quest for the rune with your first task of getting the key to free him.

You will need two items before returning to Mathers. Pickpocket the mobs in the cave on the northern side of the compound until you loot a Compound Cage Key, then head deeper into the cave. In the southeastern corner you will see a ramp; follow it upward and near the top you should see a chest you will need to unlock to obtain the Kurzen Fighter's Uniform. You will need at least 125 Lockpicking to open the chest.

With both items, return to Wendel Mathers and free him from the cage. Then head back to Booty Bay and meet Captain Aransas (roughly 27.8, 76.6) who will award you with the Rune.

WaylayBoots

Head to Deadwind Pass and speak to the Dalaran Agent at Ariden's Camp (roughly 52, 35), just north of the turn heading east into Swamp of Sorrows. The agent gives you Ariden's Sigil, which can be used to provoke hidden Dark Riders to reveal themselves. You will know you are near a Dark Rider when you gain the buff Dark Presence. Upon killing a Dark Rider you receive a Dalaran Relic — you need 7 relics from 7 different Dark Riders.

Recommended order: (1) Deadwind Pass (43, 29) - (2) Swamp of Sorrows (69, 28) - (3) Duskwood (22, 51) - (4) The Badlands (58, 54) - (5) Arathi Highlands (60, 40) - (6) The Barrens (52, 36) - (7) Desolace (65, 25). Return to the Dalaran Agent with all 7 relics to claim the Rune.

Rolling with the PunchesBootsHead to Camp E'thok in northern Thousand Needles (follow the ridge going west/northwest). Once there, enter the largest of the tents and inside you will find a lockbox on the floor. Open it and it will award you with a smaller lockbox you must lockpick; continue lockpicking the boxes that come from this box and eventually you will be awarded with the Rune.
⚠️ Warning: Shadowstep (Belt) and Deadly Brew (Chest) both require solo dungeon runs and are gated behind level thresholds (30 and 20 respectively). Do not attempt the Shadowfang Keep solo run for Deadly Brew until your Pickpocket and Stealth skills are high enough to navigate the instance without breaking stealth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the strongest Rogue rune in WoW Season of Discovery?

Shadowstrike (Pants) and Between the Eyes (Gloves) rank as the highest-impact runes depending on your playstyle. Shadowstrike merges Hemorrhage and Shadowstep into a single 30-energy button and is the core of Subtlety builds. Between the Eyes adds a 5-second guaranteed Stun with physical damage and is the top pick for PvP and Combat-leaning specs.

Are Rogue rune unlock methods different by race in SoD?

Yes — the majority of early rune quests have race-specific unlock routes in your starting zone or nearby areas. Between the Eyes, Blade Dance, Mutilate, Shadowstrike, and Quick Draw all have separate chain steps for each race. A small number of runes — including Envenom and Deadly Brew — use a single faction-agnostic questchain available to all races at the appropriate level.

What level do I need to start unlocking Rogue runes in Season of Discovery?

Early gloves and pants runes such as Between the Eyes, Shadowstrike, and Blade Dance are available from level 1 in your starting zone. Deadly Brew (Chest) requires level 20 and triggers via mail. Shadowstep (Belt) requires level 30 and also triggers via mail. Waylay and Master of Subtlety are tied to level 25–35 zone progression in Stranglethorn Vale and Deadwind Pass.

How do I get the Shadowstep rune in WoW SoD?

At level 30 a letter arrives in your mailbox directing you to a chest in Pyrewood Village, Silverpine Forest (47.1, 71.1). Opening the chest starts The Eye of Bhossca quest, which sends you into Scarlet Monastery's Graveyard wing with a disguise, requiring you to pickpocket a Scarlet Scryer key and alternate /sit on two courtyard benches to spawn a hidden chest. After completing the questchain, a final trip to the Dead Drop at Pyrewood Village awards Shadowstep.

What does Envenom do for Rogue in Season of Discovery?

Envenom deals Nature damage scaled by the number of Deadly Poison stacks on the target, then consumes those stacks on cast. It rewards a poison-stacking rotation — apply Rupture to maintain a Bleed, build Combo Points while Deadly Poison stacks, then Envenom as your finisher. The total damage per Combo Point is higher than Eviscerate when you are maintaining full Deadly Poison stacks.

How many Dalaran Relics do I need for the Waylay rune in SoD?

Exactly 7 relics — one from each of the seven Dark Riders spread across Deadwind Pass, Swamp of Sorrows, Duskwood, The Badlands, Arathi Highlands, The Barrens, and Desolace. The Dalaran Agent in Deadwind Pass (52, 35) provides Ariden's Sigil, which reveals hidden Dark Riders when you walk near them. Consider grouping with a friend — the six-zone route is time-intensive even with a mount.

Can I equip multiple Rogue runes at the same time in Season of Discovery?

Yes — one rune per gear slot, with no restriction on combining runes from different slots. You can have Shadowstrike on pants, Between the Eyes on gloves, Deadly Brew on chest, Shadowstep on belt, and Waylay on boots all active simultaneously. The game enforces one rune per slot but places no cross-slot restrictions, allowing full rune set customisation for your preferred build.
