Carry the Drakefire Amulet to Enter Onyxia’s Lair

Every raider needs their own Drakefire Amulet in their bags. You do not need to equip it. Earn it through your faction’s quest chain before arranging the raid.

Onyxia’s Lair is a level-60, 40-player raid in Dustwallow Marsh, announced to open December 9, 2026. The date has no confirmed opening hour in Blizzard’s raid and attunement overview. The faction routes below follow that announcement; exact coordinates and drop rates are not assumed from Classic.

Use the Alliance or Horde section in this page’s contents to find your route. Keep your current quest name handy when arranging a dungeon group: two players both “doing attunement” may need different objectives.

Alliance: Begin with Dragonkin Menace

Start: Helendis Riverhorn, Burning Steppes. The Alliance route centers on Windsor and Blackrock Depths before its final Upper Blackrock Spire objective.

Reach Windsor and finish the Blackrock Depths stages

Dragonkin Menace begins the route.
Follow the six The True Masters quests to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan’s Vigil.
Marshal Windsor sends you into Blackrock Depths.
Abandoned Hope returns you to Maxwell.
Loot A Crumpled Up Note from Blackrock Depths enemies and deliver it to Windsor.
A Shred of Hope: recover the information from Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge.
Jail Break!: escort Windsor, then report to Maxwell.

Before your group enters: compare active quests. A player still reporting to Maxwell is not necessarily ready for the same objectives as someone starting the escort. Take the relevant follow-up before treating the next dungeon clear as chain progress.

Finish Stormwind and obtain the amulet

Stormwind Rendezvous: meet the squire at Stormwind’s gates.
The Great Masquerade: complete the Stormwind event with allies. Speak to the squire if Windsor is absent.
The Dragon’s Eye: follow Highlord Bolvar Fordragon’s referral.
Drakefire Amulet: obtain the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire and complete the turn-in.

Blizzard’s outline does not name the contact reached through The Dragon’s Eye; use that quest’s current directions. The squire is spelled “Rower” once and “Rowe” later in the announcement—look for the quest contact at the gates rather than searching for two separate NPCs.

Horde: Begin with Blood and Thunder

Start: Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, Badlands. The Horde route includes Blackrock Spire objectives, Rexxar, Myranda and Emberstrife before awarding the final amulet.

Report to Thrall, then find Rexxar

Take Blood and Thunder from Goretooth.
Complete Warlord’s Command in Lower Blackrock Spire.
Follow Goretooth’s report to Eitrigg and Thrall in Orgrimmar.
For the Horde!: obtain Warchief Rend Blackhand’s head for Thrall.
Finish What the Wind Carries, then find Rexxar in Desolace for The Champion of the Horde.

Check the destination for For the Horde! before selecting a wing. Blizzard’s outline labels that step Lower Blackrock Spire, while the available Forever quest entry only specifies Blackrock Spire. Follow the active quest’s destination; this guide does not resolve that discrepancy by importing an older Classic route.

Complete the disguise and dragon trials

The Testament of Rexxar: visit Myranda the Hag, Western Plaguelands.
Oculus Illusions: collect Black Dragonspawn Eyes.
Emberstrife: use the Amulet of Draconic Subversion for the encounter in Dustwallow Marsh.
Complete the four The Test of Skulls quests: Scryer, Somnus, Chronalis and Axtroz.
Ascension...: take the Dull Drakefire Amulet back to Rexxar.
Blood of the Black Dragon Champion: defeat General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire.
Return to Rexxar for the finished Drakefire Amulet.

Before gathering allies: confirm which dragon or dungeon objective each player has. Do not assume that killing the same target advances everyone if their prerequisite turn-ins are unfinished.

Check That You Have the Finished Entry Item

The Horde chain uses several similarly named amulets. Compare the exact inventory name before leaving for the raid.

If the entry item is missing, check the final quest turn-in and your bags before assuming a raid clear or another player’s completion attunes the character. The published requirement applies to each raider.

Prepare the Group Before December 9

Finish access work separately from assembling the raid. Confirm everyone’s level, finished amulet, faction and ruleset before departure; our ruleset guide explains grouping boundaries.

Blizzard recommends fire-resistance preparation for Onyxia, but publishes no exact mandatory resistance target in this overview.
