Unlocking Content in Vessel of Hatred
Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred expansion (October 2024) introduced Nahantu, a dense jungle region with gated content behind a series of Priority and Side Quests. Unlike earlier Diablo 4 expansions where optional quests were purely narrative, VoH's quest structure directly controls access to the endgame loop β skipping them locked players out of major systems. This guide covers which quests mattered most and what each one unlocked.
Players blocked at a difficulty gate can check out D4 character boost services to push through without replaying the entire quest chain.
The Deeds of a Champion Quest
"Deeds of a Champion" was the central progression gate for Nahantu's endgame. Completing it fully unlocked the Tree of Whispers in the new region and made its Grim Favors available. The quest chain required:
- Completing three Nahantu dungeons.
- Finishing the Tenets of Depravity side quest chain.
- Clearing Kichuk Stronghold (northeast Nahantu, boss: Kirma Blood Bargainer).
- Completing the three mercenary recruitment quests: Slayer's Retribution, A Feather on the Scale, and A Nameless Mystery.
Players who rushed straight to endgame after the main campaign often hit the Deeds of a Champion wall at the point they wanted to start farming Nahantu Tree of Whispers rotations.
Kurast Undercity
Kurast Undercity was Vessel of Hatred's signature dungeon activity β a three-floor, timed challenge with 100 seconds per floor, where players spent Tributes on modifiers to influence the loot at the end. Unlocking it required completing "The Kurast Undercity" priority quest chain, which became available after the "Reunion" campaign quest.
Players who wanted to farm Kurast Undercity tiers without working through all the access quests could explore Diablo 4 dungeon carry services as an alternative route.
Penitent Difficulty and Runecrafting
Two of the expansion's most-anticipated systems both required quest completion before they became available:
- Penitent Difficulty: unlocked after completing or skipping the base game campaign. For returning players who had already finished the campaign in a prior season, the unlock was retroactive.
- Runecrafting: VoH's new gear-crafting system unlocked via "Fundament of Faith." Completing the quest provided a cache of Runes and opened a Priority Quest to learn Runecrafting from the Jewelcrafter in Nahantu.
Both unlocks were available from the start of the expansion for players who completed the required quests.
The Second Entrance into Nahantu
Vessel of Hatred added a second route into Nahantu: initially, players could only enter from Kehjistan. After clearing Kichuk Stronghold, a new bridge opened providing a direct path from near Zarbinzet in Hawezar into the Nahantu swamps. This second entrance shortened the commute for builds that staged from the Hawezar waypoint and opened new strategic options for seasonal objectives in the region.
VoH Quest Unlock Summary
Vessel of Hatred's quest-gating system rewarded players who engaged with the expansion story: each completed chain unlocked a distinct endgame mechanic rather than purely narrative content. The expansion was succeeded by Lord of Hatred in April 2026, which introduced Paladin and Warlock. The quests and systems described here remain part of the live game's progression for new characters entering the VoH campaign.
