BlizzCon is always an exciting event for gamers, especially for fans of the Diablo series. This year's convention provided us with a plethora of interviews featuring the Diablo staff and various content creators. In this blog post, we'll be summarizing some of these interviews conducted by ActuallyArcane and Wudijo, highlighting key information about the highly anticipated game, Diablo 4.
ActuallyArcane Interview Highlights
Focus on Scale and Atmosphere
The developers at Blizzard are shifting their approach to showcasing in-game landscapes and scenes. Instead of the previous "View Points" style, they want to emphasize scale and gravity to give players a truly immersive experience. They are working on finding the best way to present this without causing motion sickness issues for players.
New Areas and Lilith's Role
The upcoming region, Vessel of Hatred, will feature new areas that are dark, foreboding, and drenched in blood. Even within a lush jungle, the atmosphere will remain ominous. The developers are focused on portraying scale in this region, such as the jungle absorbing buildings and giant tree roots. Additionally, Lilith was chosen as the antagonist right from the start of development. The team wanted to explore a different aspect of the lore and present players with a deeper and more conflicted story.
Storytelling and Side Quests
While some players have expressed a desire for choices that influence the story, the developers have chosen to take players on a specific journey and tell a specific story. They want players to feel a sense of discomfort and unease with their actions, never fully comfortable with the consequences. Furthermore, Diablo 4 will offer more side quests and content that showcases the smaller scale events and the struggles of everyday people in the Diablo world.
Revisiting Familiar Places and a New Class
The expansion in Diablo 4 will allow players to revisit locations they've encountered before, adding new dimensions to familiar areas. Additionally, a brand new class will be introduced to Sanctuary, providing players with a fresh and unique gameplay experience.
Continual Evolution and Community Engagement
The developers of Diablo 4 understand the importance of player feedback and plan to adapt and change the game based on community sentiment. They are committed to delivering updates and changes that align with the players' desires. Community engagement, such as the campfire chats, allows the developers to showcase their passion for the game and connect with players on a more personal level.
Wudijo Interview Highlights
Skill Customization and Skill Tree
Blizzard is open to exploring new gameplay styles for skills that have already received gameplay-changing items. This means that skills can evolve beyond the current limits set by these items. Additionally, the Skill Tree in Diablo 4 may be expanded to offer further upgrades and options for players.
Challenges and Endgame Content
Blizzard aims to strike a balance between making the game accessible and providing challenging content for players who have obtained optimal gear. Systems like the Abattoir of Zir are being developed to address this need for endgame challenges.
Balancing and Uniques
The developers strive to keep Key Passives open-ended, avoiding funneling players into specific build choices. They are also cautious about making Uniques stronger than Legendary powers, as they want to maintain a diverse range of build options and avoid players favoring Uniques over other items. However, future updates may introduce additional Uniques and adjustments to maintain a healthy game environment.
Seasonal Experiments and Class Design
The Seasonal system allows Blizzard to experiment with different game-based systems, introducing them temporarily to gather player feedback. Depending on the success and reception, certain aspects from Seasons may be integrated into the game in a modified form. Class fantasy and balance are crucial elements for the Diablo 4 team, as they strive to make each class unique while ensuring they remain effective in all aspects of the game.
Skill Customization and Group Dynamics
Blizzard is open to implementing more modular skill customization options in Diablo 4. However, these features present challenges such as bugs, performance issues, and balancing problems. The addition of support effects that benefit the entire group is a topic of discussion, as it can enhance group dynamics but may inadvertently discourage solo play.
