Diablo 4 Introduces New Training Dummy - Concerns Arise with Necromancer and Druid Summons

Patch 1.2.1 introduces the highly requested Paragon Resets and Training Dummy features to the game, but there are issues with the dummy for Necromancer and Druid classes. This blog post discusses the new Training Grounds location and details the problems faced by players when trying to test builds for Necromancers and Summoner Druids.

Introducing the Training Grounds

Patch 1.2.1 added The Training Grounds to Diablo 4 β€” a dedicated area in Kyovashad where players can test builds against stationary targets before committing to a dungeon run. Located past the statue on the right side of the stairs leading toward the Cathedral of Light, the area includes a stash for quick gear swaps and an interactive statue that configures your training session.

The statue lets players choose between three enemy types: Normal, Elite, or Boss. You can also select a single target or a group of five, making it straightforward to test AoE damage versus single-target output side by side.

Necromancer and Druid Issues with the Training Dummy

Despite the feature's welcome arrival, Patch 1.2.1 launched with two specific class bugs that limited its usefulness for certain players.

Necromancers found that their summoned minions did not attack the training dummies as intended. Worse, Necromancers could not spawn corpses during training sessions β€” a significant problem since most summoner builds rely on corpse generation to trigger secondary abilities and maintain minion uptime. Without corpse spawns, it was impossible to evaluate the full loop of a summoner build.

Druids encountered a parallel problem with their Companion skills. Spirit Companions would sit idle during training sessions rather than attacking the dummy, making it effectively impossible for Companion-heavy Druid builds to get accurate damage readings.

Both issues left summoner-focused players unable to use the Training Grounds for their primary use case: verifying that their build's pet damage and synergy interactions worked as expected before committing to endgame content.

Blizzard Response and Fix Status

Blizzard acknowledged the Necromancer and Druid training dummy bugs shortly after Patch 1.2.1 launched and flagged them for an upcoming hotfix. The Training Grounds feature itself remained functional for all other classes during this period.
