Choose a Route You Can Keep Completing
For efficient Diablo 4 leveling, start with a route your character has unlocked, use a difficulty that lets you keep moving, and spend less time restarting failed attempts or sorting items. The current character level cap is 70. A promising experience bonus is only useful if you can finish the activity reliably.
This guide is reviewed for the live game on October 24, 2026, during Season of Hell's Legacy. It separates a first campaign character, a returning alt and expansion endgame.
First Character, Returning Alt or Existing Level-Cap Character?
Blizzard's Lord of Hatred systems overview confirms the universal level-70 cap and distinguishes expansion campaign starts from completed-story access. Use the options shown for your account rather than assuming a new account has every skip unlocked.
| Your situation | Start here | Useful next goal |
|---|---|---|
| First character or unfinished campaign | Follow your available campaign and its feature-unlock quests. | Learn the build while opening the systems and travel options you will use later. |
| Alt with a suitable campaign skip available | Choose that start deliberately, then use available map and seasonal objectives. | Complete repeatable tasks without replaying a story you have already finished. |
| Lord of Hatred owner starting its campaign | Use the expansion start if that is the story you want to play. | Complete the campaign to reach its associated endgame features. |
| Character already at level 70 | Choose a specific gear or endgame progression goal. | Do not follow a character-leveling loop merely because an old guide calls it the fastest XP farm. |
Campaign skipping changes the experience for that character. Read the confirmation and choose it because you want the completed-story route, rather than treating it as a routine button to press before understanding the story options.
Set Difficulty Around Completion, Not the Largest Bonus
The current Season of Hell's Legacy notes unlock Expert and Penitent after the Prologue. They also adjust later Torment experience rewards. Neither change proves that the highest unlocked difficulty produces the best leveling pace for every character.
Try a manageable setting and watch what slows you down. If ordinary packs require long stops, elites repeatedly drain your resources or deaths interrupt the session, lower the difficulty while improving the build. Revisit a higher setting when your main skill, resource recovery and defenses support it.
📌 Do not bring the old World Tier IV route into the current game: guides written around launch-era level-100 progression use an older difficulty framework. Follow the unlock requirements and rewards displayed by the current client.
Build a Session Around Available Objectives
A new character benefits from finishing its campaign and class-related unlocks before detouring into a disconnected farm. An established alt can instead select activities already available to it. Keep the next completion visible on the map or in the quest log.
- Check the character’s next campaign, class or seasonal unlock and finish it if it opens a system you intend to use.
- For a completed-story character, choose an available map objective such as a Whisper or an event you can complete comfortably.
- Where objectives overlap in the same area, finish them together rather than repeatedly crossing the map for isolated tasks.
- Collect completion rewards and evaluate the next available objective before restarting the same dungeon by habit.
- Return to town with a purpose: replace a weak item, salvage or sell accumulated loot, then resume the chosen activity.
Use a build with a clear resource cycle and a practical starter setup. A finished endgame plan that assumes items you do not own can be worse for leveling than a simpler explained setup. The community-build evaluation guide shows what to check before copying one.
Use Season Progression for More Than Character XP
For a Seasonal character, review the active Season Rank objectives and rewards while choosing activities. Select goals that fit the character's actual progress rather than copying a prior season's reward list or rushing an objective beyond the build's capabilities.
Season of Hell's Legacy's documented Blessings concern Curiosities, salvage, Masterworking, glyph upgrades and Ancestral Whisper caches. That list does not include a universal character-XP urn. Check the current Season interface rather than searching for an old Urn of Aggression instruction.

Where War Plans Fits After the Campaign
Lord of Hatred owners can use War Plans after its campaign, creating activity chains at the Command Table in Temis. Blizzard describes a playlist that can combine activities and transition between them, with Whispers able to overlap chosen activities. This is a useful way to organize expansion endgame, rather than a base-game purchase requirement for leveling to 70.
The Season 15 update shares War Plans progress only between characters matching the relevant realm, Hardcore and Solo Self-Found partitions. Do not assume an SSF character inherits the same progression as a non-SSF alt. Each eligible character still chooses its own plan.
Fix the Bottleneck Before Changing the Whole Route
| What is slowing you down? | Change worth trying |
|---|---|
| Frequent deaths | Lower difficulty and repair missing defensive tools before attempting longer pulls. |
| Running out of resources | Check the build’s resource generation and required enabling pieces. |
| Constant inventory stops | Use the current loot-filter options and group town tasks into deliberate visits. |
| Repeated travel | Choose nearby objectives with a shared destination or a clear activity chain. |
| Old guide disagrees with the client | Check its patch, realm and expansion requirements before following its route. |
A personal comparison should use the same activity, similar conditions and time spent on travel and inventory. A single fortunate drop or an unusual party does not establish a general experience-per-hour rate.
