Choose the Core Skill You Want to Build Around
Rapid Fire suits a barrage-and-ricochet approach; Penetrating Shot rewards lining up piercing shots and using walls. Both are ranged Rogue options. “Demon Hunter” describes a familiar bow-wielding fantasy here; the actual Diablo IV class is Rogue.
This comparison covers Season 15, level-70 endgame Cold Imbuement setups, checked October 25, 2026. It compares the two builds maintained by Lexyu at Icy Veins; their complete point allocations and equipment plans are linked below. A leveling character should use the corresponding leveling guide before attempting these endgame versions.
| Decision | Rapid Fire setup | Penetrating Shot setup |
|---|---|---|
| Main attack pattern | A barrage aimed at a target; Ruckus provides ricochets to additional enemies. | A piercing line; Ballista modifies the shot. |
| Signature bow | Skyhunter. | Eaglehorn; wall bounces can hit a target again. |
| Mobility and support pairing | Dash and Shadow Clone. | Shadow Step and Concealment. |
| Positioning question | Can you keep the barrage directed at the priority target? | Can you line up enemies and exploit the available walls? |
If your available bow already supports one option, start by comparing that complete equipment plan with your inventory. Switching only the Core skill leaves the rest of the setup unaccounted for.
The Two Skill Bars
Rapid Fire: Heartseeker, Rapid Fire, Dash, Dark Shroud, Cold Imbuement and Shadow Clone. Use Lexyu’s Rapid Fire allocation and gear plan for the matching modifiers, Aspects and Paragon choices.
Penetrating Shot: Heartseeker, Penetrating Shot, Shadow Step, Concealment, Dark Shroud and Cold Imbuement. Its Penetrating Shot allocation and gear plan includes the supporting cooldown setup. Shadow Clone is not on this version’s skill bar.
The Combo Point Rotation Depends on Your Charms
Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred overview explains the Talisman system: a Seal opens Charm slots, and collecting Set Charms activates partial or complete bonuses.
Both linked builds use five Nilfur’s Narrow Eye Set Charms. Their completed set automatically triggers three Heartseeker casts per Core attack, supplying Combo Points. Before completing those five pieces, Lexyu recommends Inner Sight for these setups.
Automatic Combo Points do not remove every manual Basic cast. These versions still cast Heartseeker every four seconds to maintain Vengeance. Check the completed-set condition before copying footage of repeated Core attacks; a character missing that set does not have the same rotation.
What Changes Between Packs and Bosses?
The shared Confluence modifier on Heartseeker groups enemies. Rapid Fire then uses ricochets to reach additional targets, while Penetrating Shot benefits from keeping the group in its firing line. With Eaglehorn, boss positioning can create a second hit through a wall bounce; the room and angle matter.
Both Cold Imbuement versions depend on freezing enemies and reaching boss Stagger for their full damage interactions. Their guides also warn of lower damage against Unstoppable enemies. A strong pack clear therefore does not establish identical damage throughout a boss fight.
When a setup feels incomplete, compare its bow, five-piece set, skill modifiers and supporting Aspects with the same linked plan before investing in a second Core skill. That identifies a missing dependency more usefully than treating an isolated damage percentage as a complete build.
