Greetings adventurers!
It’s been an incredible journey since the release of Diablo IV, and we are thrilled to see the passion and dedication of players worldwide. With the upcoming Season of Blood starting on October 17, Blizzard has shared a comprehensive blue post about the changes discussed during their Campfire Chat livestream. Let's delve into the in-depth details to get a grasp of the exciting modifications coming to Diablo IV!
Resistances Gets Overhauled
One of the major changes coming in Season 2: Season of Blood involves a complete overhaul of Elemental Resistances. In the previous season, resistances functioned on an inverse multiplicative basis. However, this led to issues where Armor outperformed individual elemental resistances. In the Season of Blood, Elemental Resistances will now be simplified and additive.
The base cap for Elemental Resistances has been set to 70% and can be further increased to a hard cap of 85% through various means such as Skills, Paragon Boards, and Elixirs. Armor will only reduce physical damage, making Elemental Resistances more valuable for total effective Life. Rings and Amulets will now have two inherent stats: Resistance to All Elements and a random Elemental Resistance. This change aims to make Elemental Resistances a crucial aspect of character survivability, presenting players with a puzzle to solve on how to maximize resistance while providing the tools to achieve that through itemization and character development.
By around Level 80, players should be able to reach the maximum base of elemental resistances. The focus then shifts to prioritizing other stats for character optimization. The journey to solve the resistance puzzle is an exciting one, and it's not a matter of if you will reach the maximum, but rather the path you choose to take.
Revamped Unique Items
The community has expressed their desire for Unique items to have more impact and excitement. In response, Blizzard has done a significant redesign of these items, updating nearly all of them in the game. The four-fold strategy for updating Unique items involves:
- Adding completely new stats to Unique items, creating unique properties that aren't typically found.
- Increasing the stat ranges of existing properties on Unique items, giving them more power and variability.
- Adding stats to slots where they typically wouldn't exist, enabling new build possibilities.
- Updating Unique powers and effects to make them more engaging and useful.
By implementing these changes, Blizzard aims to make Unique items more enticing, reduce opportunity cost, and encourage players to experiment with them more frequently.
Damage Buckets Get Rebalanced
The calculation of damage in Diablo IV is receiving an overhaul to rebalance how different damage sources interact with each other. Previously, damage sources such as Critical Strike Damage, Vulnerable Damage, and Overpower Damage were multiplicative in nature, which created a significant surge in player power when combined. However, this favored builds that exploited this synergy, while other builds fell behind.
In the Season of Blood, Blizzard is adjusting the way damage sources interact. While different damage buckets still exist, only the base amount of bonus damage from each method will be multiplicative. The rest will be additive when combined. This change aims to make individual damage sources more equal in value, allowing for a wider range of viable builds. Additionally, Overpower Damage has been improved to make it more competitive as a damage source.
Class Improvements and Scaling Effects
Alongside systemic changes, Blizzard is making balance updates and general improvements to all Classes in response to community feedback. For example, Sorcerers' Incinerate skill will have reduced ramp-up time for its bonus damage, and Druids' Nature's Fury will now count as both Earth and Storm skills. Furthermore, scaling effects will be added to various mechanics across all Classes to enhance the experience of building and customizing characters.
The goal is to create more nuanced itemization choices and allow players to explore different avenues of power scaling as they progress through the game. These changes also synergize with the revamped Unique items, opening up exciting possibilities for specific builds that can take full advantage of unique properties.

These changes aim to enhance the overall Diablo IV experience by reimagining Elemental Resistances, making Unique items more impactful, balancing damage sources, and improving Class dynamics and builds.
Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to hearing your feedback as we continue to shape the ever-evolving world of Diablo IV.
