Use Obols for a Gear Purchase or a Silent Chest
Murmuring Obols fund randomized gear purchases at the Purveyor of Curiosities. The documented currency cap is 25,000. Choose what you want the currency to accomplish before spending it: improve a particular equipment slot, make room for more Obols, or keep enough for a chest encountered while exploring.
This guide follows the live systems documented through October 28, 2026. Blizzard's 3.1 patch notes increased the Obol cap to 25,000. The larger cap creates room to accumulate currency; it does not make every purchase a useful upgrade.
Choose an Obol Source That Fits the Rest of Your Session
For a planned dungeon session, inspect the Nightmare Sigil's positive affix. Horadric Reserves adds specialized reward chests whose possible contents include Obols, Gold, Gem Fragments and resources. That makes the affix relevant when you want currency alongside the dungeon's other rewards. It does not promise an Obol chest in every run.
Blizzard lists those reward categories in the live 2.3 notes. Use the affix shown on the sigil you actually have, rather than assume every Nightmare Dungeon has the same reward setup.
| Source | When it helps | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Horadric Reserves Nightmare Sigil | You want a repeatable dungeon activity that can also supply Obols. | The special chests have several reward categories; the affix is required for this particular route. |
| Curious Murl | You encounter the purple Treasure Goblin while pursuing another objective. | Its bag is useful, but finding a Murl is an encounter opportunity rather than a fixed farming circuit. |
| First discovery of an Altar of Lilith | You are exploring an area with undiscovered Altars. | A small, one-time contribution; revisiting a discovered statue is not a repeatable Obol farm. |
For Altars, Blizzard's 2.5 changes replaced permanent character bonuses with a small first-discovery reward of Gem Fragments, Obols and Gold. Collect an undiscovered Altar when it fits the exploration route; use a repeatable activity when currency is the main goal.
Choose a difficulty you can complete consistently. A run that stalls on enemies or ends in failure is a poor way to fund the next purchase. Compare complete runs, including travel and time spent sorting rewards, before deciding which activity suits your character. This is a practical selection method, rather than a fixed Obols-per-hour ranking.
Handle Curious Murl's Bag Before Opening It
Curious Murl is the purple Goblin associated with Obols. Blizzard's Goblin variant announcement identifies its reward as Murl's Bag of Obols and specifically says the bag can be collected into inventory even when the character is at maximum Obol capacity.
The variants introduced in that announcement remained after the March 2025 event ended. The event's temporary increase in Goblin activity is a separate benefit; it is not a permanent spawn-rate promise.
When a bag drops, use this order:
- Collect the bag. Being at the currency cap does not prevent collecting this inventory item.
- Check the balance before opening it. If the balance is full, leave the bag unopened while deciding how to spend some Obols.
- Make the useful purchase, then return to the bag. Keeping it closed until there is currency room avoids treating the bag's special collection rule as permission to exceed the cap.
The bag is a reason to interrupt a nearby route for the appropriate Goblin. It is not a reason to wander indefinitely looking for a guaranteed spawn.
Spend at the Purveyor with a Clear Equipment Goal
The Purveyor lets you choose the gear category to purchase; the resulting item is randomized. Start with the slot that would solve a real problem in the build. A weak piece you are actively trying to replace is a clearer target than buying unrelated categories simply because the balance is high.
- For an immediate equipment gap: select that slot, inspect the purchased item, and compare it with what is equipped before buying more.
- For a particular power: check the current build and item description first. The 3.0 skill-tree overhaul moved some former item powers into skills and moved other effects onto gear. An old build's item shopping list may therefore need revision.
- When spending to create room: use a category that still has value to the character, then stop to review the results. The reason to spend is making the balance useful, rather than exhausting it automatically.
Read the price displayed by the current vendor before each purchase. Comparing the listed costs is useful when several categories could help, but the cheapest category is not automatically the right choice for the missing upgrade. A purchase also does not let you select the exact affixes or a named Unique.
Uniques are possible through the Purveyor: Blizzard's 3.1 notes include a fix for Unique gambling in Temis. That does not establish a drop rate or guarantee a particular item. After buying, decide whether the result is an upgrade, worth keeping for another setup, useful to salvage, or surplus to sell.
Read the Obol Cost on the Silent Chest
Check the Silent Chest interaction prompt and its displayed Obol cost before opening it. Blizzard's 3.2.1 interface notes added this cost information to chest tooltips. Keep enough currency available for the amount shown.
If opening Silent Chests is part of the exploration session, leave some Obols available after gambling. Use the amount shown by the chest to make the decision. A chest opening and a targeted gear-category purchase serve different purposes: the chest is an opportunity encountered in the world, while the Purveyor lets you choose the equipment category.
Use the Season 15 Urn for Extra Purchases
During Season of Hell's Legacy, Season Rank rewards provide Smoldering Ashes for Seasonal Blessings. The Urn of Curiosities increases the chance of receiving a second item when purchasing from the Purveyor, as listed in the season announcement.
That makes it relevant when a seasonal character plans to spend a saved balance on gear. Its stated benefit is the chance of an additional item; it does not promise a better rarity or a named Unique. The blessing belongs to this seasonal progression system, so an Eternal character should plan spending without assuming it applies.
