Four Elemental Vaults, With Rewards Tied to Surviving the Hazards
Season of the Construct’s four regular Nightmare Vaults combined dungeon progression with a separate Warding challenge. Finishing the fights and preserving enough protection for additional treasure were related goals, but not the same goal.
This reference covers their January–February 2024 rules. constant’s February 13 announcement at Wowhead compared completion time, layouts and traps. Its accompanying image identifies the four Vaults, rather than supplying numerical ranks or clear-time measurements.

Identify the Vault Before Comparing a Sigil
| Nightmare Vault | Elemental theme in the original reference |
|---|---|
| Vault of Cinders | Fire |
| Vault of Stone | Cold |
| Vault of Copper | Lightning |
| Vault of Ink | Poison |
The names help distinguish the environmental theme. A sigil’s tier and affixes still matter separately, as does the character’s ability to handle that combination. The Vault of the Loom belonged to the Malphas encounter route, rather than being another interchangeable entry in this four-Vault comparison.
Separate Warding, Stone Progress and Glyph Progress
Blizzard’s original seasonal overview unlocked Nightmare Vaults in World Tier III. Vault Sigils could drop alongside Nightmare Dungeon Sigils or be crafted. At the entrance, Pearls could purchase Zoltun’s Warding; taking hits from the environmental hazards reduced it.
Remaining Warding mattered for Wardwoven treasure. Governing and Tuning Stones served the Seneschal, while Paragon Glyph progression served the character. A run chosen to push the highest tier was therefore a different decision from a repeatable farming run with comfortable trap avoidance.
For evaluating an old route, record the completed run and the reward actually sought. Clearing faster while losing access to desired treasure may not improve that particular farm. Conversely, a slower but consistent route may be useful when it preserves the reward the player came for. This is a planning distinction, not a measured ranking of the four Vaults.
January 26 Changed the Warding Budget
Patch 1.3.0a, Build 49404, changed several rules only three days after the season began:
- One Pearl at a Zoltun statue granted ten Warding stacks, up from three. The maximum increased from 300 to 999.
- The protection against rapid repeated stack losses increased from one second to 1.5 seconds. Several traps hitting within that interval did not each remove another stack.
- Elemental Dart projectiles slowed by 20%. Floor grates, spikes and elemental-pillar spouts received smaller hitboxes, and Obelisk hazards lost their knockback.
A launch-day route or Pearl recommendation may therefore describe a harsher version than the February 13 announcement. Keep the recorded patch attached when comparing trap losses or resource spending.
Malphas Access Used a Different Resource After That Patch
The same update introduced Igneous Cores for the Uber Vault and Echo of Malphas, replacing Pearls for that access. Vault Heralds could drop Cores, and Son of Malphas guaranteed them in World Tier IV. Pearls retained their Warding purpose.
This separated two preparation questions: protection for ordinary Vault treasure and entry to the boss route. Treating all of those costs as one Pearl requirement would mix the original launch rules with the later system.
Read an Old Farming Recommendation With Its Conditions
The useful comparison is the entire run: Vault name, sigil tier and affixes, patch, character setup and desired reward. Change one part at a time when reviewing a route. The elemental name alone cannot establish which choice is fastest or most rewarding for every character.
Vaults and the Seneschal were Season 3 features. The systems above preserve that historical progression loop; they should not be followed as a current-season access or loot guide.
