Check Your Realm Before Farming Renown
Renown remains an Eternal Realm progression system. It was removed from the Seasonal Realm in patch 2.5. Seasonal characters pursue Season Rank for the additional power rewards that replaced the old regional grind. Your character's realm determines which route to follow.
The live 2.5 patch notes confirm the Seasonal removal. Blizzard's system overview explicitly retains Renown on Eternal. Check that distinction before using an old route that promises permanent Skill Points from a new Seasonal character's exploration.
| Character | Power progression to inspect | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Realm | Season Rank objectives and rewards. | Open the Season menu and identify an eligible objective or the challenge blocking the next rank. |
| Eternal Realm | The region's Renown progress and its character and account rewards. | Open the map, inspect the region's progress and choose an unfinished activity toward a reward you still need. |
Exploration can still serve other goals on a Seasonal character. For additional Skill and Paragon progression, follow that season's Rank objectives.
Seasonal Power Comes Through Season Rank
For the Season of Hell's Legacy, Blizzard lists nine ranks and 125 objectives, with rewards including up to 14 Skill Points and 42 Paragon Points.
The official season overview also explains the expansion limit: approximately 15% of Seasonal Objectives require Lord of Hatred, including objectives needed to complete Rank VIII and earn all Season Rank rewards. A base-game account should not plan around receiving the full advertised maximum without that expansion.

Use each objective's actual wording to choose your next activity. Check its required difficulty, completion condition and reward, then check progress after the activity. If the next rank is blocked, inspect its required challenge. Farming unrelated map discoveries will not complete that challenge.
Blizzard describes these as account-wide seasonal goals and rewards. Track the season's completed objectives and available rewards before repeating work on another Seasonal character.
Renown No Longer Adds Potion Charges
Base Potion capacity is four, regardless of previous Renown progress. The old extra-Potion-capacity reward was removed from Renown in the Eternal Realm too.
The system overview documents both changes. The 2.5.2 update, dated January 12, 2026, also fixed previously earned Renown Potion charges incorrectly remaining on some characters. An old screenshot with more Renown-granted charges is therefore not a current reward plan.
If your reason for clearing a region is an extra Potion charge, inspect the remaining Eternal rewards or your Seasonal Rank objectives and choose another goal.
Read Eternal Region Progress Before Choosing a Route
On an Eternal character, open the map and inspect the selected region's progress. Renown is regional: completing work in one region does not mean you have reached the reward you want in another. Read the reward's status, the progress still needed and any requirement shown for claiming it.
Choose the reward you actually need before planning an exhaustive clear. If it is already claimed for the account, repeating every activity for another hero's Experience or Gold is a different decision. If it is locked, follow its displayed requirement rather than a launch-era World Tier instruction.
Combine Eternal Exploration, Quests and Strongholds
A useful Renown session has a destination and several compatible objectives along the way. Start with the region's unfinished categories and the quests you already hold. This keeps travel purposeful without requiring a single prescribed route for every character.
| Regional activity | How to work it into your route |
|---|---|
| Discovering areas | Travel through an undiscovered section while heading toward a quest or Stronghold, rather than making a separate journey for every location. |
| Waypoints | Activate an unclaimed waypoint near your destination so later quest turn-ins and return trips are easier. |
| Altars of Lilith | Collect nearby missing Altars while exploring. Check existing discovery progress before following an entire collection route again. |
| Tenets of Akarat | Use the region's relevant collectible category. A route written for Altars of Lilith does not describe every regional collectible. |
| Side quests | Group nearby objectives and turn-ins. If a quest sends you into a dungeon you still need, pursue both tasks together. |
| Dungeons | Choose a dungeon whose regional completion is still needed, especially when it overlaps with an active quest. Check its recorded completion before repeating a clear solely for Renown. |
| Strongholds | Choose an unfinished Stronghold on the route and finish its objectives. Do not assume ordinary fighting nearby completes the Stronghold's regional credit. |
For example, take a side quest whose destination lies beyond an undiscovered area, activate a waypoint en route, collect a nearby missing Altar, then complete the quest's dungeon if its regional credit is still needed. Check the resulting region progress before selecting the next destination.
Cellars and world events can be worthwhile for other goals, but they need not interrupt this trip. Keep your chosen regional objective in mind rather than treating every nearby activity as necessary for Renown.
On the Seasonal Realm, do not use an Altar or Tenet collection route as a permanent-stat grind. Blizzard's Seasonal changes describe Altars of Lilith and Tenets of Akarat as granting Experience and minor rewards instead of permanent stats and power. The extra Skill and Paragon progression belongs to Season Rank.
Account Unlocks and Character Completion Are Different
Blizzard's 2023 Renown persistence explanation established the distinction: earned power bonuses carried between characters, while Renown Experience and Gold had to be earned by each character. The subsequent Seasonal removal means that old cross-season wording must now be read alongside the Eternal-versus-Seasonal rules.
For an Eternal alt, compare account rewards with that character's own Experience and Gold claims before repeating a long quest route. A shared power unlock and an unfinished side quest can coexist on the same hero.
Compare characters in the same realm and game mode. Normal-character progress should not be treated as Hardcore progress. Blizzard's historical Hardcore carryover explanation describes progress carrying within Hardcore; it does not turn a Normal character's exploration into Hardcore completion.
Stop at the Reward You Need, Then Reassess
You do not need an exhaustive regional clear just to reach a Renown milestone. Stop and inspect the reward panel once the required progress is reached. More exploration or quests may be worthwhile for their own rewards or story, but that is a new goal rather than an unlimited series of Renown power bonuses.
Older point tables also need their date attached. In patch 1.1.0a in July 2023, Blizzard increased side-quest Renown from 20 to 30 and dungeon Renown from 30 to 40, applying the gain retroactively. The original patch archive documents that change. A launch table using 20 and 30 describes an older version.
World Tier III belongs to the original difficulty structure. Current progression includes Torment tiers; follow the requirement displayed on the Eternal reward you want to claim.
For your next session, choose either a specific unclaimed Eternal regional reward or an eligible Seasonal Rank objective, then plan the activities that actually advance it.
