Season 4 Lowered Sacred and Ancestral Equip Levels
Diablo 4's Season 4: Loot Reborn launched with Patch 1.4.0 on May 14, 2024. Its itemization changes lowered the minimum character levels for equipping Sacred and Ancestral gear and brought some Unique drops into earlier difficulties. This is a historical explanation of those Season 4 rules.
Blizzard's Patch 1.4.0 itemization notes separated three different requirements: a character's equip level, a monster's drop eligibility and an item's power. Keeping them separate explains what the update did, without promising a particular item at a particular character level.
The New Minimum Equip Levels
The minimum requirement depended on the item's Sacred or Ancestral classification.

A minimum is not a guarantee that every item of that classification has the same requirement. The item's own tooltip still determines whether a particular character can equip it. The 35-level Sacred threshold does not establish a level-35 requirement for every Unique or Uber Unique.
Which Unique Drops Became Available Earlier?
Under the historical difficulty system, Uniques previously obtained in World Tier III could drop as non-Sacred items in World Tiers I and II. Uniques previously obtained in World Tier IV could drop as Sacred items in World Tier III.
The patch also allowed Uber Unique items to start dropping from monster level 55, at 925 item power. Monster level describes the enemy that can supply a drop; it is not the character level required to equip that drop. Item power is a separate equipment value.
How to Read an Old Season 4 Gearing Recommendation
Start with the version of the game being discussed. Then check the recommended item's classification and its own required level. If the recommendation concerns a drop, check the enemy-level condition separately rather than substituting your character level for it.
For example, “Sacred gear can be equipped from level 35” and “Uber Uniques can begin dropping from level-55 monsters” describe different conditions. Combining them does not prove that a level-35 character can equip an Uber Unique. Nor does permission for an item to drop guarantee that it will appear on a given kill.
These distinctions made the Season 4 changes useful for understanding earlier access to gear. Use the rules and tooltips for the version you are playing when planning a character today.
