What Changed with Season of Blood in 2023

The item was Scroll of Escape, and this article records the original Season 2 change. Blizzard’s Patch 1.2.0 notes, dated October 17, 2023, added automatic consumption of a scroll when a Hardcore player disconnected during combat. Its purpose was to move the character to a safe location.

This was an item-based safeguard, not a blanket rule that every disconnected character would survive. The scroll had to be available to consume; a scroll left in storage was not one the character was carrying.

The Conditions Were More Specific Than “Safe Disconnect”

  • Hardcore: the change addressed Hardcore characters, where a death could end that character’s run.
  • Combat disconnect: the patch described automatic use in that situation. It did not announce a general resurrection system.
  • A consumable scroll: the protection spent an item, so one previous escape did not prove that another scroll remained available.

For preparation, inspect the character’s carried items before entering dangerous content and check them again after an escape. Counting scrolls in account storage answers a different question from checking the supply available to the active character.

Why the Announcement Was Not a Survival Guarantee

The same historical patch archive contains a fix for Scroll of Escape sometimes failing to trigger correctly during a disconnect. That record is another reason to avoid translating intended behavior into a promise that technical deaths became impossible.

The documented safeguard was an attempt to consume a specific item under specific conditions. It did not establish invulnerability, a guaranteed response time or restoration of a character that had already died. Do not test it by deliberately disconnecting a character you want to keep.

Use Current Item Rules for a Current Hardcore Run

This page preserves the 2023 change. Later patches adjusted Scrolls of Escape, including their presentation and handling. Blizzard’s 2024 patch archive, for example, records changes to the stack limit and recovery of missed drops.

For a new run, check the current item and patch notes before relying on old drop-rate, level-requirement or inventory advice. The useful lesson from the original announcement is its conditional scope: carrying a scroll mattered, and automatic use was never a reason to ignore connection problems.
