Abattoir Strategy from December 2023
Abattoir of Zir demanded both a completed clear within ten minutes and survival through the final Bloodseekers. Its launch-week tips need to be read alongside the December 8 hotfix, which changed boss affixes, difficulty and Glyph rewards.
Blizzard introduced the event during Season of Blood. Its announced window was December 5, 2023–January 23, 2024. This page explains strategy for that closed original event.
Manage the Whole Attempt, Including the Final Fight
Blizzard’s original rules gave players ten minutes to summon and defeat the final Bloodseekers. Tharid’s December 6 tips also emphasized that one death ended the run, including a party member’s death in a group.
That made reaching the final fight quickly only part of the task. A route that saved time but repeatedly killed a party member was not a successful farming route.
- Build progress through useful packs. The launch advice favored elites and dense groups. Spending too long on an isolated target could leave too little time for the final encounter.
- Consider a shrine for the finish. The original writer suggested saving useful shrines for the three final Bloodseekers. This was a routing choice, with its value depending on reaching the shrine when the buff was useful.
- Use repeatable clears for progression. The same tips recommended lower tiers to develop Tears of Blood when pushing stalled. Keep Sigil Powder for repeated attempts, rather than treating a higher attempted tier as a completed reward.
These launch suggestions preceded the encounter changes issued two days later.
The December 8 Hotfix Changed the Encounter
Blizzard’s Hotfix 2 for 1.2.3a made these changes:
| System | After December 8, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Bloodseeker affixes | Vampiric and Suppressor could no longer spawn on Bloodseekers, across both Season of Blood content and AoZ. |
| Early difficulty | Tier 1 began near Nightmare Dungeon Tier 90; Tier 5 near Tier 100; Tier 10 matched the previous tuning. |
| Incoming damage | Reduced by up to approximately 20% across all AoZ tiers. |
| Glyph XP | Higher-tier rewards increased; Tier 1 remained at 1,000 XP. |
Launch-week discussion of Vampiric Bloodseekers predates that removal. Applying it to a post-hotfix Bloodseeker fight would describe an affix that could no longer appear there.
Keep the Loot Reports Attached to Their Dates
The December 6 tips reported roughly four to seven 900+ Item Power drops. A December 11 report by Jezartroz described four equipment rewards of at least 900 after a successful completion. These are separate dated reports, rather than a single universal reward-count rule.
The historical AoZ loot reference explains that completion reward and its limits. For build dependencies behind the strategy, use the Season 2 class directory.
