Twelve S-Tier Builds Before the Abattoir Opened
The November 24, 2023 preview placed 12 builds in S tier across all five original Diablo 4 classes. It was a Patch 1.2.2 assessment published before Abattoir of Zir opened on December 5, rather than a record of completed high-tier clears.
Arktane’s original Wowhead announcement highlighted damage, versatility and overall efficiency. Its saved image preserves the complete S-tier group below. These are historical Season of Blood choices; the event ran from December 5, 2023 to January 23, 2024.

Find Every Build in the Original S Tier
Grouping by class makes it easier to locate an existing character. All names shared the same S rating; their order here does not establish a first-to-twelfth ranking.
| Class | Builds pictured in S tier |
|---|---|
| Barbarian | Hammer of the Ancients (HotA); Upheaval |
| Druid | Pulverize; Stormclaw; Werewolf Tornado |
| Necromancer | Bone Spear; Infinimist; Omnistorm; Pentadot |
| Rogue | Twisting Blades |
| Sorcerer | Arc Lash; Ball Lightning |
Necromancer had four pictured options, Druid three, Barbarian and Sorcerer two each, and Rogue one. That describes the preview’s selection, not how many viable builds each class could ultimately support. The image contains only S tier; lower-tier placements are outside this saved snapshot.
What the Actual Challenge Demanded
Blizzard’s launch rules gave a run ten minutes to kill enough enemies to summon Bloodseekers and then defeat them. That created two distinct pressures: reaching the final encounter on time and finishing it with enough time remaining.
For a player comparing those old builds, a fast opening clear and a successful final fight answer different questions. A run that reached the Bloodseekers quickly but failed there called for examining that encounter. A run that never filled the progress bar called for examining clearing speed and movement. The S label alone could not identify which problem an individual setup had.
The original access chain was World Tier IV, completion of every Season Journey chapter, and a Bloodforged Sigil crafted at the Occultist. The sigil opened the Visceral Channel in Ked Bardu. Successful tiers unlocked the next sigil recipe, up to tier 25; the first completion awarded Tears of Blood.
Three Later Changes That Put the Preview in Context
- December 5: the event opened. The November evaluation could not include experience of the released encounter.
- December 8: early difficulty was restructured. Blizzard’s Hotfix 2 put tier 1 near Nightmare Dungeon tier 90 difficulty and tier 5 near tier 100, with tier 10 matching its previous tuning. Incoming damage fell by up to roughly 20% throughout the event’s tiers.
- The same hotfix changed Bloodseekers and Glyph rewards. Vampiric and Suppressor affixes were removed from Bloodseekers, and higher-tier Glyph XP increased. Those were encounter and progression changes, separate from the preview’s build ratings.
Keep any clear or comparison attached to its run date and tier. A later result under adjusted rules cannot directly verify a prelaunch prediction. Blizzard’s original event announcement also limited Abattoir rewards to Season of Blood, so this reference is not a current farming route.
