Match the Farm to the Missing Crafting Material
In Diablo 4 Season 7, Headhunts supplied seasonal ingredients for Occult Gems, while activities such as Infernal Hordes helped with an ordinary Gem Fragment shortage. The useful route depended on what was missing from the chosen craft. A large fragment balance could not stand in for a required Fugitive Head or another Occult Gem.
This is a historical materials guide for the Season of Witchcraft, which began January 21, 2025. Its seasonal powers, recipes and farming choices belong to that ruleset. Blizzard’s Season of Witchcraft announcement describes Gelena's crafting system and the Headhunt ingredients.
Diamond and Skull were ordinary gem and fragment types. They were not names for Occult Gems. The crafted seasonal socketables had names such as Wicked Pact, Heart of Anima and Toadling's Wish. Keeping the ingredient and the finished socketable separate makes the farming plan much clearer.
Plan the Craft Around Gelena's Inputs
Gelena at the Tree of Whispers handled Occult Gem crafting. The launch description listed two groups of inputs:
- Initial Occult Gem crafting
Fugitive Heads, Restless Rot and Gem Fragments.
- Higher-tier crafting
Fugitive Heads, Restless Rot, Gem Dust and other Occult Gems.
For a Season 7 craft, the working shopping list came from the selected recipe in Gelena's crafting panel: its material names, required quantities and any component gems. The announcement's ingredient groups explain the system, but they do not specify a complete quantity table for every craft. Keep the panel's exact material labels as separate entries when planning.
- Choose the intended gem and tier. Check that its effect fits the Witchcraft setup before gathering a large stock of materials.
- Inspect the entire recipe. Include any other Occult Gem it consumes; planning only the final craft can hide an earlier component craft.
- Compare the requirements with inventory. That identifies whether the next session needs a seasonal ingredient, ordinary fragments, or a component gem.
An existing gem required by the recipe was part of the next craft's cost. Reserve it until deciding whether to complete that upgrade, rather than treating every unequipped Occult Gem as surplus.
Identify the Material That Is Holding Up the Craft

The table is a way to choose the next activity, rather than a ranking of one universally fastest farm. It also keeps the crafting plan useful when one material is plentiful and another is still missing.
Use Headhunts While Seasonal Ingredients Are Missing
Headhunts combined several parts of the material hunt. Completing their Whispers advanced Coven Favor and revealed Exposed Roots, with a rare chance for Uprooted Cocoons. Cocoons led to Headrotten boss encounters; a boss with its Fugitive Head still attached was the relevant outcome for reclaiming a Head.
Headrotten also supplied Restless Rot. This made the route useful while more than one ingredient was missing. Completing the surrounding objectives kept other progress moving between the rarer Head opportunities.
A Headless Husk encounter and recovering a Fugitive Head were different results. Evaluate the whole session's useful materials and objective progress, rather than expect a Head from every boss. Use Infernal Hordes for a Fragment Shortfall
RenataKane's February 1, 2025 material-farming report identified Infernal Hordes as a Gem Fragment option, alongside Headhunts and the supplemental sources below. Those observations belong to Season 7.
For a successful Hordes run, the relevant reward choice was the Spoils of Materials. Blizzard’s 2.0 changes to Infernal Hordes made the materials chest consume all remaining Aether, with rewards scaling with the amount spent. The gold chest also consumed the remaining balance, so the end-of-run choice mattered.
Decide which shortage the run is meant to solve before spending Aether. If ordinary fragments were blocking the gem and the seasonal ingredients were ready, the materials reward matched that goal. Spending the balance on gold served a different need.
Pick a difficulty the build can finish consistently. A higher potential reward is less useful when the run becomes unreliable or takes much longer. Compare the complete session, including the final reward and return to crafting, rather than only the density of enemies during a wave.
Add Fragment Sources That Fit Other Progress
The same dated report described these secondary options. They were useful for a fragment shortage, with different availability limits:
- Augment Caches in the Den
The report placed them in Bartering once Aldkin reaches Rapport VIII. Check available stock rather than assume a cache is always offered.
- Material Collection of Gem Fragments
This was a Whisper reward option worth selecting when offered and fragments were needed. Its appearance was not assured at every turn-in.
- Gem Cache side quests
The report highlighted Gold Well Spent in Fractured Peaks as an example. Treat an available quest as a one-off supplement, rather than a repeatable farming loop.
The Den option required access to Vessel of Hatred's Mercenary system. Blizzard’s Mercenary overview explains how Rapport expanded Bartering and how Pale Marks purchased items there. It was an additional route for an expansion owner already developing Mercenaries, rather than a prerequisite for every Season 7 gem farm.
For a side source, account for the effort needed to access it. A useful reward already on the current route is a different proposition from starting a new progression track solely to reach one cache. After claiming the available supplement, return to the activity that supplies the remaining ingredient.
Reserve Restless Rot for the Upgrade You Have Chosen
Restless Rot had competing uses: Witchcraft ranks and Occult Gem crafting. Favor advanced Coven reputation; it did not pay a Rot cost. Before spending Rot on a rank, compare that immediate improvement with the materials reserved for the selected gem.
For example, a character with the required Head and a planned component gem could still delay the final craft by spending the reserved Rot elsewhere. A character struggling to finish the farm might instead choose a useful power rank first, accepting that the gem would need more Rot afterward. The choice depends on the next improvement the build actually needs.
