Evoker Theorycrafters & Wowhead guide writers, Preheat & Jereico, recently had the opportunity to sit down with Blizzard developers George Velev (Game Producer) and Jade Martin (Lead Combat Designer) to discuss the exciting new Chronowarden Hero Talents that will be introduced in The War Within expansion. In this exclusive interview, they delve into the details of the new talent system, exploring what it means to be a Chronowarden, the thematic design behind the talents, and the importance of balance.
The Future of Hero Talents
In the Shadowlands expansion, players experienced challenges with the Covenant system. The team at Blizzard took these lessons to heart when designing the Hero Talents system for The War Within. They wanted to eliminate the disparity between class fantasy and power, allowing players to choose what they want, when they want. The talent trees are meant to be learned and explored while leveling up, and players will have the ability to switch their talent choices at any time. This ensures that the gameplay experience remains fluid and enjoyable, without the need to make permanent decisions that could impact class fantasy and power balance.
For the sake of balance, Blizzard has established guidelines to ensure that each specialization has a similar number of nodes for various aspects such as single target vs. AoE, utility vs. damage, and PvE vs. PvP. The goal is to provide players with a balanced and cohesive experience, where they can fully embrace their chosen fantasy. While the talent trees will not be perfectly balanced like traditional class trees, as players will have access to the entire package, Blizzard intends to maintain overall balance with only a few choice nodes being exceptions.
Favorite Talents and Inspiration
The interviewers were curious to know which talents were the developers' favorites, and whether any talents drew inspiration from early Evoker concepts that didn't make it into the game. The developers expressed their excitement about the "Warp" talent, which is a highly impactful ability in terms of movement and blink mechanics. The Evoker Warp is immediately recognizable as a Chronowarden signature ability, showcasing the team's dedication to capturing the essence of time control and manipulation. Other talents, such as "Flow State" and "Timeskip," also draw inspiration from similar concepts to further enhance the Chronowarden fantasy.
Impact on Gameplay
Given that Hero Talents are a new addition to the game, the interviewers were curious about the impact these talents would have on gameplay and rotations. The developers emphasized that the talents should provide a sense of impact and excitement without adding unnecessary complexity or disrupting established playstyles. The core specialization and class should still feel familiar and true to their essence. While the new talents inject some additional gameplay into the spec, the developers are keen on fine-tuning the level of complexity to strike the right balance. With 39 talents in total, players can expect a range of options, each offering a unique level of complexity to explore and master.
Unleashing the Power of Warp
One of the interviewers expressed their enthusiasm for the Warp talents, especially as a veteran mage player. They inquired whether Warping would allow players to teleport over hazards, and what would happen when Warping in a neutral position. The developers clarified that Warp functions similarly to the mage ability "Blink," enabling players to teleport past hazardous obstacles. While the concept of Warping in a neutral position is relatively new, the developers expressed their interest in exploring this possibility to enhance the overall gameplay experience for Evokers. Additionally, they entertained the idea of implementing Warping as a means to break out of crowd control effects, a potential change that would likely excite PvP enthusiasts.
Balance for Different Specializations
The discussion then shifted to the consideration of balance for the different specializations within the Chronowarden class. The interviewers pointed out that the Augmentation specialization now has access to a low cooldown large damage reduction ability, and inquired about the efforts being made to equalize the power between Augmentation and Devastation. The developers explained that, as Chronowarden is both an Augmentation and Preservation specialization, certain talents' value could differ between the two specs. However, they assured that Devastation spec would also receive a similar damage reduction ability to maintain balance. It is important to note that the numbers mentioned are not final, as they are subject to ongoing internal playtesting and iteration.
Tweaks and Improvements
During the discussion, the interviewers expressed their satisfaction with the inclusion of Chronowarden talents for abilities that were previously perceived as underwhelming. One such talent is "Tip the Scales," which received significant improvements with the introduction of the Chronowarden talents. They also inquired whether Threads of Fate would follow the targeting priority already established with Augmentation spells, and what lessons from Augmentation had been incorporated into the Hero Talents. The developers responded that, at this stage, Threads of Fate will have auto-targeting to allies, with a preference for DPS roles. The team aimed to avoid the necessity of focusing healing spells on specific DPS players in the Preservation specialization. However, they remained open to feedback and potential adjustments based on player input.
Adding Flavor and Gameplay Opportunities
Given the inclusion of the Augmentation specialization, the interviewers raised the question of balancing the two DPS roles when one of them has a support role. They wondered if Hero Talents were designed to bridge this gap or provide additional support/utility options. The developers clarified that the primary aim of Hero Talents is to offer new gameplay opportunities for each spec. While the Preservation and Devastation specializations can dip into support abilities, the overall focus is on enhancing gameplay and flavor. The support-themed talents in the Chronowarden class primarily focus on increasing throughput rather than providing utility or defensive buffs. This allows for a wider tuning budget, ensuring that both the Scalecommander and Chronowarden specs can perform at a similar level, while still offering distinct playstyles. It is worth noting, however, that these support-themed talents are not mandatory picks.
Ensuring a Cohesive Experience
The interviewers expressed their concern about the potential for added complexity and button overload with the introduction of new talents and utility to existing abilities like Warp and Tip the Scales. The developers emphasized that they are constantly monitoring this aspect and actively seeking feedback on the matter. Their intention is to offer bonuses to existing abilities without fundamentally altering how those spells are utilized. They aim to strike a balance where the talents provide exciting enhancements without overwhelming players with excessive mental tasks. The tuning process is still ongoing, and the developers are committed to iterate and refine the abilities based on player feedback.
Prescience, Buff Targeting, and Future Adjustments
One of the talents discussed during the interview was "Prescience," which not only acts as a buff but also serves as a buff targeting ability. The interviewers raised concerns about the potential disruptiveness of abilities like "Golden Opportunity" and the possibility of future changes to buff targeting mechanics. The developers clarified that there are currently no plans to make adjustments to buff targeting at the Hero Talent level. However, they acknowledged the potential for interesting interactions with Prescience resets, particularly with "Anachronism" procs, which could add an element of unpredictability akin to a casino-style gameplay. They recognized the concerns and assured that the choice nodes, such as "Mastery of Destiny," offer more straightforward options to cater to different player preferences.
Player Feedback Drives Progress
In conclusion, the developers expressed their keen interest in gathering player feedback. They hope that, once the talents go live, they will receive feedback from the wider community about the fantasy, how well the talents embody that fantasy, and their impact on gameplay and rotations. They are pushing to include the majority of these talents in the first public testing of The War Within expansion. The developers encourage players to share their thoughts through various channels, whether it be TikTok videos, forum posts, or other means of communication. This is only the beginning, as Blizzard plans to introduce more exciting talents and expansions in the future.
