Season of Blood Added Boss Branches to Existing Activities

Diablo 4’s Season 2 progression update connected Whispers, Helltide, Nightmare Dungeons, World Bosses and Legion Events to repeatable boss encounters. The World Tier IV versions of Varshan and Grigoire then supplied the two material types used for Duriel.

Blizzard presented this structure in the October 2023 Developer Update before Season of Blood launched on October 17, 2023. The comparison below records those original diagrams and rules.

The Launch Diagram: Capstones, Nightmare Dungeons and Lilith

The original slide grouped activities into three broad stages. Campaign and Renown occupied the early section; the later sections connected World Tiers, capstone dungeons, Helltide and Nightmare Dungeons. Echo of Lilith appeared at the bottom as a late endgame goal.

The Season 2 Diagram: More Destinations for the Same Activities

The updated slide retained that structure but added boss destinations. It placed Varshan alongside Whispers and Grigoire alongside Helltide in both World Tier III and IV. In World Tier IV, Nightmare Dungeons connected to the Beast, while World Bosses and Legion Events connected to Zir.

The changes are easier to compare by stage:

Read the Level Bands Separately from Unlock Requirements

The slides’ 1–50, 50–70 and 71–100 labels organized the presentation. They were not new hard level requirements for entering World Tiers. Blizzard’s July 20, 2023 patch notes had already removed the level requirement for World Tiers III and IV.

The tier and encounter conditions still mattered. For example, the updated slide grouped World Tier IV Nightmare Dungeons as tiers 21–100, but Blizzard’s specific Beast access rules required Distilled Fear from Tier 30 or higher dungeons. The broad box did not mean every Tier 21 dungeon supplied the required material.

Duriel Was One Branch, Rather than the End of a Five-Boss Circuit

The World Tier IV arrows show two feeder paths:

  • Whispers → Varshan → Mucus-Slick Eggs.
  • Helltide → Grigoire → Shards of Agony.

Those components supplied Duriel. Zir and the Beast occupied independent branches, and Echo of Lilith remained a separate endgame goal. The original boss access guide gives the actual quantities and lairs; the original item-to-boss tables help choose a branch for a particular Unique.

Renown Rewards Also Changed for New Characters

The Developer Update changed what the early Renown box meant for returning players. Previously earned Skill Points, Potion Capacity, maximum Obols and Paragon Points persisted between characters. Renown XP and gold still had to be earned on each character.

The Hardcore carryover rules applied within Hardcore. This avoided treating every box in the diagram as a task that every new character had to repeat from zero. The slides show activity relationships; the patch rules explain which account progress, tier conditions and materials applied.
