The Original Duriel Route Used Grigoire and Varshan
In Diablo 4 Season 2, World Tier IV Grigoire supplied Shards of Agony and World Tier IV Varshan supplied Mucus-Slick Eggs for Duriel. Lord Zir and the Beast in the Ice had their own rewards and access materials; they were separate branches of the original boss system.
This guide describes the October 2023 Season of Blood system from Blizzard’s original overview. It records the original locations and costs, rather than later-season summoning or reward rules.
All Five Lairs and Their Original World Tiers

Matching the region and dungeon name avoids confusing an encounter with its campaign version or with a similarly named area. Grigoire’s lair was in the Dry Steppes; Varshan’s was by the Tree of Whispers.
Collect the Material for the Boss You Actually Need
Grigoire: Living Steel from Helltide
The original summon cost was 2 Living Steel in World Tier III or 5 in World Tier IV. Living Steel came from the special Helltide chest. The original-system Grigoire walkthrough identifies the Hall of the Penitent’s location and those two costs.
For the Duriel route, the distinction between the two difficulties mattered: the Shards of Agony came from the World Tier IV encounter.
Varshan: Body Parts from Whispers
In World Tier III, the original offering used one Blackened Femur, one Trembling Hand and one Gurgling Head. World Tier IV added one Malignant Heart. These were summoning components, and that Heart was different from the socketable Season 1 Malignant Hearts.
Blizzard described body parts from Grotesque Debtors and Tree of Whispers reward collections. The World Tier IV encounter supplied the Mucus-Slick Eggs used for Duriel.
Lord Zir: Exquisite Blood
The original World Tier IV summon required 9 Exquisite Blood from World Bosses and Legion Events. The Lord Zir encounter entry locates the Bloodied Altar within Ancient’s Seat.
This summonable endgame encounter should be distinguished from meeting Zir in the seasonal story. It also had its own loot pool, rather than supplying Duriel’s two original component types.
The Beast in the Ice: A Crafted Nightmare Sigil
The original path used 9 Distilled Fear and 250 Sigil Powder at the Occultist to craft a Glacial Fissure Nightmare Sigil. Distilled Fear came from Tier 30 or higher Nightmare Dungeons. The October 2023 boss-access guide records the crafting quantities and Tier 31 sigil.
The crafted sigil was part of that original access process. Later versions changed the system, so this is not a current sigil-crafting instruction.
Duriel: Two Components from Two World Tier IV Bosses
The offering was 2 Mucus-Slick Eggs and 2 Shards of Agony. The Season of Blood Duriel walkthrough records the Gaping Crevasse location and the two-component requirement.
The original route was therefore Helltide materials into Grigoire and Whisper materials into Varshan, followed by combining their World Tier IV rewards for Duriel. Farming Zir or the Beast was not an additional prerequisite in that chain.
Choose a Target from Its Loot Pool
For an item goal, use the complete original item-to-boss tables. They distinguish overlapping regular Unique pools and the seven original Uber Uniques associated with Duriel.
That keeps two decisions connected: which boss listed the desired item, and what was needed to access that encounter. It avoids spending time on an unrelated branch simply because all five bosses arrived in the same season.
