Spend Obols on the Equipment Your Character Needs

The Purveyor of Curiosities exchanges Murmuring Obols for random equipment of the type you select. Choose an offered item type, read its Obol price, make the purchase and inspect what you actually received. You choose the type of equipment; you do not choose its exact affixes, Legendary power or Unique identity.

Use this as another chance to repair a weak slot while you play. A purchase can produce something useful, something worth salvaging or an item your character has no use for. Spending more currency does not make the next result a guaranteed upgrade. Identify the problem you want to solve before buying a full inventory of the same item.

Find the Vendor and Read the Current Price

Open the town map and locate the Purveyor of Curiosities vendor marker, shown as a bag with a question mark. Kyovashad is one place to visit; select the marker to check the vendor's position rather than following a remembered street location. If you cannot find the service, check which map filters are enabled and zoom into the town.

Talk to the Purveyor and review the offers available to your character. Select the weapon type or equipment slot you intend to improve, then read the displayed Murmuring Obol cost before confirming. An item sharing a broad label such as weapon does not establish that it has the same cost, use or availability as another offer.

For a useful comparison, ask what each purchase could improve. A cheaper item is poor value for your immediate goal if that slot is already strong. A more expensive item is not automatically a stronger result. Keep Gold and Obols separate when reviewing the vendor interface: equipment gambling spends the Obol balance.

Check the 25,000 Obol Cap Before Collecting More

The current Murmuring Obol cap is 25,000. Blizzard's released 3.1.0 patch notes, dated June 30, 2026, increased the cap from 2,500 to 25,000. Open your character's Stats & Materials currency display to check the balance before collecting a large reward or opening an Obol-bearing container.

If you are close to the limit, visit the Purveyor and make room through purchases that have a purpose for your build. You can spend enough to create headroom without emptying the entire balance. Ordinary currency capacity and an unopened reward item are different things; do not assume that picking up a bag proves all of its contents have been added to your balance.

Altars of Lilith are no longer a route to permanent Obol-cap increases. The released 2.5 Altar update removed permanent character rewards from these statues. First discoveries instead award small amounts of Gem Fragments, Obols and Gold. Discover an Altar for its current rewards; do not plan a capacity-farming route around the old system.

Collect Event Rewards and Watch for Curious Murl

Local world events are a way to earn Obols while exploring. Complete the event's objective and collect the reward chest. Events inside dungeons and cellars, and reward caches that list Obols, can also contribute. Read the objective and any optional mastery condition while the event is active, then inspect the actual rewards rather than assuming every encounter pays the same amount.

A cursed chest or shrine event is a combat objective, distinct from a locked Silent Chest. Complete the event and collect its rewards before moving on. Neither the presence of a shrine nor the word chest establishes a fixed Obol payout. When choosing an activity to repeat, consider whether it also advances the character's other goals, such as equipment or progression.

Curious Murl is the purple Treasure Goblin associated with Obols. Blizzard's official Goblin introduction states that killing it drops Murl's Bag of Obols. The bag can be collected into your inventory even when your Obol balance is at its cap. Make room in the currency balance before opening it; the collection exception is for the bag, not a higher currency limit.

Murl was introduced with the 2025 March of the Goblins event, and Blizzard explicitly made the new Goblin variants permanent across realms. The increased Goblin activity during that event was temporary. You can take advantage of a Murl encounter without expecting the old event's boosted appearance rate or a guaranteed farming route.

Choose a Slot by the Problem It Can Solve

Inspect your equipment before spending. A slot that lags behind the rest of the build gives you a concrete reason to gamble there. Once it improves, reconsider the next purchase instead of continuing automatically.

You mainly need room below the Obol capA slot where a better item or useful Legendary power would still help.Whether further purchases still serve a goal after an upgrade; there is no need to spend every remaining Obol.

If you are hunting a particular Legendary power, inspect its current Codex entry and acquisition instruction first. Gambling can produce Legendaries, but it does not select the power you want. A verified dungeon unlock or an appropriate existing drop may solve that missing-power problem without repeated random purchases. Check how Aspect unlocks work before treating a missing effect as a reason to replace otherwise useful equipment.

Inspect Each Result Before Equipping or Salvaging

Blizzard's released 2.2 reward changes improved Purveyor item quality in Torment difficulties, including the chances of Legendary, Unique and Ancestral items. These are possible outcomes, not a guarantee of a specific rarity or named item. Choose a difficulty your character can play effectively rather than building a spending plan around an assumed success rate.

  1. Compare the whole item. Check its requirements, relevant affixes and equipment effect against what you are wearing. A higher rarity does not automatically preserve the interactions your build needs.
  2. Keep a useful replacement. Confirm how it will fit the complete loadout before destroying the piece it replaces or paying for further crafting.
  3. Check unwanted Legendaries for a Codex upgrade. Salvaging an eligible Legendary at the Blacksmith can learn or improve its Aspect. The learned power and the physical item are separate benefits.
  4. Review the remaining items for salvage or sale. Decide whether their available materials or Gold serve your next upgrade. Salvage destroys equipment, so remove anything you intend to keep before a bulk action.

A disappointing equipment roll can still have a useful learned power or salvage value, but some results will not help your current setup. Recheck the chosen slot after a useful purchase and leave inventory space to inspect the next batch safely.

Read the Silent Chest Cost Before Buying Keys

When you find a Silent Chest, inspect its interaction tooltip before spending currency or returning to a vendor. Blizzard's released 3.2.1 interface update added Obol-cost information to Silent Chest tooltips. Use the requirement and amount shown for the chest you are opening.

If its prompt requires a Whispering Key, check your inventory and the Purveyor's current offer. Avoid stocking keys solely because an older guide lists a fixed price of 20 Obols. Check what you can buy now and what this chest asks for, then decide whether you want to spend those Obols on the chest or keep them for equipment gambling.

Opening a chest gives another loot opportunity. It does not guarantee the exact item your build needs. Keep that distinction when deciding how much of your Obol balance to reserve for exploration.
