Complete Whispers and Turn In 10 Grim Favors

Complete Whispers of the Dead on the map to earn Grim Favors, then exchange 10 Grim Favors for a reward cache and experience. Turn in at the Tree of Whispers or an available Raven of the Tree, and choose from the caches actually offered according to the resource your character needs next.

The Tree is a recurring bounty hub: the map supplies the objectives, Grim Favors track your progress toward a turn-in, and the cache supplies the reward. Blizzard's original Whispers overview describes the ten-Favor exchange and frequently rotating objectives. Cache rewards have changed since that early description; the reward guidance here includes the September 2026 updates.

  1. Open the map and inspect an active Whisper's objective, Favor value and any displayed time remaining.
  2. Choose a task you can finish, complete its actual objective and check that your Favor progress updates.
  3. At 10 Grim Favors, visit the Tree or a city Raven and inspect the offered cache rewards.
  4. Claim a useful cache, open it and collect its contents, then select the next active objective for your next turn-in.

Use the full objective text. Reaching the marked location or killing nearby enemies may only be part of the task; follow any remaining objective or interaction before moving on.

Start from Your Character's Story State

If Whispers and their progress are already available, you can use the bounty loop. If they are missing, check your current campaign selection and quest journal for the story or Priority Quest handoff offered to that character. A character continuing a campaign and one created with a later story start can have different outstanding introductions.

Blizzard's Lord of Hatred campaign overview identifies Story Complete: Endgame as a new-character starting option available after completing the Lord of Hatred campaign. It also describes campaign skipping at Character Select for existing characters. Use the quests and activities available to the character you are playing; the older campaign route does not establish that every endgame character must replay it.

For a character following the Vessel of Hatred story, read the VoH quest route for the documented Ormus, Undercity and Nahantu Whisper handoffs. That route helps identify the next story objective without treating the entire Deeds of a Champion chain as a prerequisite to its own Tree turn-in.

Choose a Route by Objective Value and Time

Compare the displayed Favor reward with travel, completion time and the activity you wanted to run anyway. A distant objective can be a poor choice even if its headline Favor reward is larger. A nearby task that overlaps your current activity may fit the session better.

  • Read the requirement: check what must be killed, collected, completed or interacted with. Plan for the whole task.
  • Read the remaining window: when an expiry is displayed, allow enough time for travel and the objective. Recheck the map before setting out for an older marker.
  • Look for overlap: compare active Whispers with the dungeon or world activity you already intend to complete.
  • Check progress after completion: confirm the task has resolved and the Favor counter has advanced before planning the next turn-in.

For example, if you are near a cache turn-in and already travelling through an active Whisper area, inspect that task before starting a longer dungeon elsewhere. If the local objective has little time left or an awkward requirement, choose another active task. The useful comparison is the complete route, including the reward turn-in.

War Plans can add another reason to overlap activities

War Plans are a Lord of Hatred expansion feature. After completing that campaign, owners can use the Command Table in Temis. Whispers can double up with activities selected in a War Plan and earn their own activity progression; they do not appear as individual activity nodes to select.

If your character has War Plans access, inspect both the plan and the active Whisper objectives before travelling. Aligning them can serve two progression goals during the same activity. Your actual map objectives and selected plan determine the overlap.

Use the Tree or a City Raven for the Turn-In

You can turn in through a Raven of the Tree in a supported city instead of returning to the Tree's hub in Hawezar every time. The live 2.2.1 patch added Ravens to these six capitals:

  • Cerrigar
  • Gea Kul
  • Ked Bardu
  • Kyovashad
  • Kurast
  • Zarbinzet

Choose a turn-in that fits the rest of your trip. If you are already visiting one of those cities to manage gear or materials, its Raven can avoid a separate journey. At the reward selection, read the cache names and descriptions before confirming the choice.

Choose a Cache for the Resource Blocking Your Next Upgrade

Start with the cost of the next thing you want to do. A shortage of Gold, gem materials and Cube ingredients are different problems. Compare that shortage with the caches currently offered rather than assume every turn-in presents every category.

The live September 15, 2026 reward changes describe the following cache categories. Whisper Caches also award Experience Orbs, with additional orbs in Torment X and above. Reward amounts and some contents depend on difficulty.

Match an offered Whisper Cache to your next resource need
Cache categoryWhen it fitsReward details to check
GoldGold is the missing cost for your planned crafting or upgrade.Rewards vary with difficulty. Check the Gold received against your upgrade cost before planning another turn-in.
GemsYour next gem-related upgrade needs fragments or gems. The updated cache grants Gem Fragments and a Royal or Grand Gem depending on difficulty. Check the gem you receive against your goal.
Cube MaterialsYou have access to the Horadric Cube and need materials for an available recipe.Check the recipe's named ingredients and remaining costs. The Cube is introduced through Lord of Hatred.
Salvage MaterialsCrafting materials are the shortage for your next item upgrade.Match the actual materials to the cost. The update increased salvage materials, with a larger increase to Forgotten Souls at higher Torment difficulties.
KeysYou want the listed activity-entry resources and can use the related content.Random Tributes and Sigil Dust; a small chance of a Mephisto Key or Trace of Echoes. The two rare items are chance-based rewards.

For example, if an available Cube recipe is blocked by a material rather than Gold, inspect the offered Cube Materials Cache before choosing Gold by habit. If you cannot yet use the relevant crafting system, a cache addressing a current need may be more useful. The choice should follow an actual recipe or upgrade goal.

Gear from a reward can help a build, but a Whisper Cache is not a guaranteed source of a particular named Legendary Aspect. Compare any equipment received with your build's requirements before keeping or salvaging it.

Read Sigil Reward Advice in Its Patch Context

The old promise of Nightmare Dungeon Sigils from Whisper Caches is outdated. The live 2.2.0 patch on April 29, 2025 removed those Sigils from the caches and replaced them with a high chance of Sigil Powder.

The September 2026 Keys Cache notes use the name Sigil Dust for their material reward and separately list random Tributes and the rare key chances. Match the actual material names and requirements shown on your cache and current crafting recipe before choosing the cache for an entry-item goal.

If your next activity needs an entry item, read the current entry requirement before farming a cache for it. A cache offering materials or a chance at a key does not promise every required entry item in one turn-in.

Keep Seasonal Bonuses Separate from the Bounty Loop

The Tree's recurring Whispers are separate from the temporary powers of a particular season. Season 7's Headhunts and Witchcraft powers belong to that earlier season; the cover image illustrates the Tree's setting, rather than a requirement to start those old activities.

For Season of Hell's Legacy, the seasonal Urn of Ancestral Whispers increases the chance for an Ancestral Cache to appear at a Whisper turn-in. It is a chance bonus, not a guarantee. Ancestral Caches themselves became part of the baseline system in 2.2.0.

The same season's three Prime Evil progression tracks all modify the Tree of Whispers. Read the modifiers you have actually unlocked when comparing an activity or cache reward. Seasonal progression can add benefits to the route; the core task remains choosing an active objective, earning ten Favors and selecting a useful offered cache.
