For a first Warrior, start with a two-handed Arms route if you want clear attacks and flexible solo play. Pick Fury when you have two competitive one-handed weapons and enjoy managing a busier Rage budget. Choose Protection when tanking dungeons is the point of your character, rather than expecting a damage build to become a dedicated shield tank by changing stance.

Reviewed November 2, 2026. All three 51-point allocations below were entered in the current Forever calculator and checked for legal rows, prerequisites and totals. They are practical starting builds, not simulated rankings or claims of live level-60 raid testing. Later beta changes take precedence over the original class announcement.

Choose Your Warrior Route

A route for the way you will play

RouteChoose it forBudget and tradeoff
Arms · 31/20/0Solo questing, a strong two-hander and deliberate cleave.Rend/Overpower/Slam support; no Bloodthirst or Flurry.
Fury · 16/35/0Dual-wield combat with two current weapons.Off-hand support, Bloodthirst and Gore Drinker; more gear dependence.
Protection · 11/5/35Learning dungeon pulls and keeping enemies on you.Shield-dependent threat and survival; slower solo kills can be the tradeoff.

The numbers always mean Arms / Fury / Protection. Your first ordinary talent point arrives at 10 and the budget reaches 51 at 60. The Talented Legacy perk can move access earlier without raising that maximum; follow the point order if your level labels differ. Change talents at a class trainer. Dual Specialization opens at 40.

Keep a shield even as DPS. You can need Shield Bash, Shield Wall or an emergency tank set. Having the shield in your bags is only preparation: stance, equipped weapon and available Rage still decide whether a defensive action can be used.

Why the Arms allocation has only 1/5 Weaponmaster: it spends deeply on Bloodthrill and Improved Slam for an active Rend/Overpower/Slam playstyle, then takes Fury utility and Rage support. It deliberately gives up the rest of Weaponmaster. For a weapon-focused alternative, move four late Fury points from Enrage into Weaponmaster after Mortal Strike, producing 35/16/0; at 1/5, only the first-rank weapon bonus applies.

The Fury plan instead reaches 35 points to take Gore Drinker 2/2. That is a real allocation choice: the recovery effect is not part of baseline Bloodthirst. Protection takes a shield-dependent defensive core and two points in Improved Shield Wall, rather than importing the old Toughness tree.

Leveling Talents: Every Point, in Order

Choose one route below and keep to its order until a milestone. Splitting early points between two trees delays the attacks that make that route work. A finished 51-point image alone does not tell a level-22 player what to buy next.

Arms milestones: Spearing Strike at 25, Sweeping Strikes at 30, Bloodthrill through 35, Improved Slam at 36–37 and Mortal Strike at 40. Improved Tactical Mastery is complete at 19; this route does not take Anger Management. Its final Fury points add utility, not Bloodthirst or Flurry.

Fury milestones: off-hand hit talents at 20–22, Raging Blows at 25, Death Wish at 30, Flurry at 35–39 and Bloodthirst at 40. Gore Drinker arrives at 43–44. Before dual wield and its supporting talents, use the best weapon you can actually equip rather than accepting a badly underleveled off-hand just to imitate the final build.

Protection milestones: Last Stand at 20, Vanguard at 25, Concussion Blow at 30, Focused Rage at 31–33 and Shield Slam at 40. The 40–44 sequence finishes the shield core before adding Arms support. Shield Bash is available well before Shield Slam: do not confuse your interrupt with your capstone damage button.

Rage and Stances: The Decisions Behind the Buttons

Incoming-damage Rage now ignores your actual armor and absorption. Wear your armor and accept Power Word: Shield. The October 8 global correction uses a level-dependent expected armor range of 20%–40%, superseding the first announcement’s fixed 50% assumption. Avoidable damage remains avoidable; generating Rage is not a reason to stand in it.

Outgoing Rage is normalized around weapon speed, and the October 1 revision increased the extra Rage from critical strikes to 100% more. A larger weapon hit is therefore not a promise of proportionally larger Rage under the old Classic formula. Judge the weapon’s damage and relevant stats separately from that assumption.

Tactical Mastery is baseline at 14: a stance change retains up to ten Rage. Improved Tactical Mastery raises the limit by three per point, to 25 at 5/5. This is retained Rage, not a grant. If you have 50 and change stance with a ten-Rage limit, you have discarded 40; switching again does not refund it.

Before you press a stance-dependent action

ActionRequirementPractical consequence
ChargeBattle Stance; not in combat. Vanguard adds Defensive Stance access.A Vanguard tank does not gain unrestricted in-combat Charge.
Overpower / Sweeping Strikes / Spearing StrikeBattle Stance.Reserve the stance change for a real opportunity.
Whirlwind / PummelBerserker Stance.Plan the next interrupt before moving out of that stance.
Shield Block / Shield WallDefensive Stance and a shield for shield actions.A two-handed damage setup is not ready to use the whole defensive kit.
Shield BashShield; Battle or Defensive Stance.Useful before Pummel and in a tank setup.

Before a stance change, know the action you are buying. An available Overpower may justify a change to Battle Stance; dumping most of a full Rage bar merely because the proc lit up may not. A tank who leaves Defensive Stance also changes the conditions for shield-dependent threat talents. Keep the next required interrupt and defensive action accessible.

Arms Rotation: Rend, Overpower and Controlled Cleave

Early levels: Charge when legal, keep Battle Shout useful, start auto-attacks and spend Rage only after protecting your next important action. Rend earns its cost when the enemy lives long enough for the bleed to matter. React to Overpower when it becomes available; train its ranks and the other attacks you use.

  1. Use a real Overpower opportunity.

Battle Stance is required. Bloodthrill later lets main-hand attacks against your Rend target activate it; a dodge is no longer the only possible reason it lights up. Do not wait for a proc on an un-Rended target and assume the talent failed.

  2. Keep Mortal Strike available once learned.

It is the central six-second attack at 40. Reserve its Rage instead of queueing Heroic Strike just before it comes ready. Its healing reduction also matters against enemies or players being healed.

  3. Fit talented Slam into a safe stationary moment.

Improved Slam changes cast time, global cooldown and swing interaction. At 2/2 it prevents Slam from delaying your melee swing and reduces the base 18-second cooldown by three seconds. Move for danger before finishing an extra cast.

  4. Spend extra Rage deliberately.

Heroic Strike replaces the next main-hand swing; it spends Rage and changes the normal white-swing resource flow. On multiple safe targets, Cleave and Sweeping Strikes can convert the same attacking time into useful extra damage. Neither justifies breaking crowd control.

Two durable enemies: arrange them together without facing their attacks into a vulnerable party member, activate Sweeping Strikes in Battle Stance, and make the copied attacks count. Cleave spends more than an ordinary swing, so leave enough for the next essential ability. A nearby neutral pack is not a free second target.

Execute range: Execute becomes available below 20% enemy health and converts extra Rage into damage. Use the opportunity to finish an important target, but do not spend everything into a target about to become immune or die before your hit. On a chain of easy quest mobs, preserving enough for the next controlled pull can be more useful than overkilling the current one.

Spearing Strike is a Battle Stance utility attack as well as damage: it dismounts, and its bonus applies to Giants, Dragonkin and mounted enemies. It no longer requires a two-handed weapon. Check the current target and stance rather than pressing it as an interchangeable filler on cooldown.

Fury Rotation: Protect the Next Bloodthirst

Keep both weapon skills current and stand behind a dungeon target when the tank can hold it steady. Use Bloodthirst once learned and Whirlwind when its target access and stance are safe. Whirlwind already attacks with both weapons in Forever; Raging Blows reduces its and Cleave’s Rage costs rather than enabling the second weapon.

  1. Maintain attacking time and required utility.

Stay in range without standing in frontal attacks. Interrupt a dangerous cast and refresh Battle Shout when needed. A damage sequence cannot compensate for a preventable death or a missed group-saving interrupt.

  2. Budget for Bloodthirst and Whirlwind.

Bloodthirst has a six-second cooldown; Whirlwind has ten seconds and requires Berserker Stance. When Rage is scarce, avoid spending the next core attack’s cost on Heroic Strike. Whirlwind also reaches nearby targets, including ones you should not hit.

  3. Use Death Wish for an actual attack window.

It increases physical damage but also increases damage taken. Pair it with reliable target access, not an imminent forced retreat. Do not ask a struggling healer to absorb its defensive cost just because the cooldown is ready.

  4. Use surplus spenders and Execute with context.

Cleave suits several legitimate melee targets; Heroic Strike suits excess Rage on one. Queueing Heroic Strike no longer gives the off-hand the old hit benefit. At low enemy health, Execute can consume the budget you otherwise reserve.

Understand the healing: Bloodthirst itself gives movement speed, not a direct heal. Gore Drinker makes specified activations, including Bloodthirst, cause the next three melee attacks to restore health. If you cannot land those attacks, the talent has not supplied an immediate emergency recovery. Blood Craze is a separate triggered regeneration effect.

Furious Precision grants off-hand hit chance; Dual Wield Specialization affects off-hand damage and Rage. Neither is a universal hit bonus to every attack. Do not add the off-hand-specific number to main-hand hit or use an Era Heroic Strike queue guide to explain your current misses.

Protection: From the First Pull to a Lost Target

Equip a shield and one-handed weapon, use Defensive Stance and give the group a clear first target. Vanguard permits Charge in that stance after talenting it; before that point, a ranged pull or an intentional stance change may be the cleaner start. Check the healer’s position and mana before spending a mobility button.

  1. Establish the first target and account for the rest.

Use Shield Slam after 40 and Revenge when its activation is available. Sunder Armor supplies threat and an armor reduction on a durable target. At lower levels these earlier tools carry the pull; do not wait for the capstone to start learning target control.

  2. Apply area pressure without assuming it is unlimited.

Thunder Clap is usable in Defensive Stance, but the current spell affects up to four targets. On larger packs, look for an enemy outside that coverage. Switch targets to put useful threat where the group is actually dealing damage.

  3. Keep resources for the dangerous action.

Shield Block, Shield Bash and your next core threat attack all compete for access. Shield Block is charge-limited protection, not a permanent barrier. Use it for incoming melee attacks that matter; it cannot interrupt a caster.

  4. Recover a lost target decisively.

Identify who it is attacking, Taunt when valid and follow with real threat. Taunt is a recovery button, not a long-term replacement for attacks. If several enemies escape, control the most dangerous one and ask for focus rather than chasing every nameplate in a circle.

Shield conditions are part of the build. Defiance’s extra threat and Master of Defense’s dodge/parry Rage require the shield. Removing it to raise damage turns off those benefits. Armor is no longer a penalty to incoming Rage, so deliberately downgrading your protection to “get hit harder” is not the solution.

Last Stand temporarily increases maximum health; plan for its expiration and the heal needed before it ends. Shield Wall is for substantial incoming damage, with a shorter cooldown in this allocation. Retaliation, Recklessness and Shield Wall no longer share a cooldown, but Recklessness increases damage taken and Retaliation does not counter attacks from behind. Different cooldowns solve different problems.

Weapon Upgrades: Concrete Items to Compare

These are verified Forever entries and useful comparisons, not an exhaustive level-60 BiS list. The database has changed rewards and missing entries; actual availability, quest access and your current weapon determine whether a detour is worth it. An item’s level is not automatically its equip requirement, and starting a class quest does not mean a solo character can finish every encounter at that level.

Axe of Rin'jiOne-hand axe · requires 48 · 1.90 speed.Later bind-on-equip comparison for a shield set or dual-wield pair; train the skill.

The three Whirlwind rewards illustrate why weapon DPS alone is incomplete: similar listed DPS comes with different speed and attack damage. Arms’ weapon-damage attacks and Weaponmaster’s weapon-type benefit change the comparison. Check the whole equipped set and your allocated rank. The current Axe, Warhammer and Sword all carry 16 Strength and 15 Stamina; they do not all gain the same Weaponmaster effect.

For Fury, compare both weapons, their skill progress and any main-hand-only restriction. Wingblade is a main-hand weapon; it is not a valid off-hand recommendation. Cruel Barb is listed as one-hand. A shield upgrade matters to Protection through armor, block and survival, not only the Strength shown beside it.

Choose hit and Defense goals for the level and type of enemy you plan to fight. Opponent level and the type of attack matter, and off-hand hit talents do not cover all attacks. For dungeon tanking, a weapon upgrade that makes control easier can be useful, but it does not replace enough health and mitigation to survive the pull.

Use this enchant reference to plan upgrades for equipment you expect to keep. Each named enchant links to its current Forever spell. Apply costly enchants to pieces you expect to keep; you do not need an endgame enchant on every temporary quest reward.

Minor Speed currently lists 4% movement speed in Forever. Do not copy the old percentage from another version. The Threat glove enchant is for a threat objective; Greater Strength is the straightforward damage alternative.

Macros You Can Copy and Actually Use

This target-attack helper starts auto-attacking even when you cannot yet afford Heroic Strike. Heroic Strike is still queued on the next melee swing; repeated presses are not a free instant damage rotation.

Start attacking and queue Heroic Strike
#showtooltip Heroic Strike
/startattack
/cast Heroic Strike

The mouseover Pummel macro attempts a valid hostile mouseover, otherwise your selected target. It does not change you into Berserker Stance, equip a shield or remove the Rage requirement. Before Pummel is trained, use your shield-and-stance setup for Shield Bash instead.

Mouseover Pummel
#showtooltip Pummel
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][] Pummel

Keep stance and equipment recovery on deliberate binds. A single “do everything” macro that changes your weapon, dumps Rage through a stance change and then tries an unavailable action can fail exactly when you need it most. Test a new bind on a safe target before relying on it in a dungeon.
