Choose a Route That Keeps You Questing in Connected Zones
For a first character, quest through your starting region, use nearby dungeons when you have their quests, and move between two suitable zones when one runs out of manageable objectives. You do not need to visit every zone listed below. Choose the branch nearest your current location and use the alternatives when quests become too difficult or heavily contested.
Alliance, Eastern Kingdoms: Elwynn Forest or Dun Morogh → Westfall or Loch Modan → Redridge, Duskwood and Wetlands → Arathi or Stranglethorn → Riverglades → Tanaris/Feralas or the Hinterlands → late-level Kalimdor zones or the Plaguelands.
Horde, Kalimdor: Durotar or Mulgore → the Barrens → Stonetalon/Ashenvale → Thousand Needles or Desolace → Riverglades or Tanaris/Feralas → Un’Goro/Felwood → Winterspring and late-level dungeons. Undead have a convenient Eastern Kingdoms opening through Tirisfal, Silverpine and Hillsbrad.
The level bands below are recommended routing windows, not minimum entry levels or a requirement to leave a zone on your next ding. Continue useful quests while they fit your character. Forever has no level scaling, so the next quest in a chain can be much harder than the one you just finished. This is a zone-and-hub route, not a claimed tested quest-by-quest speedrun.
Alliance Leveling Routes from 1 to 30
Human: Elwynn, Westfall, Redridge and Duskwood
Levels 1–10/12: work outward from Northshire into Goldshire and Elwynn’s surrounding quest areas. Return through Goldshire when a trip can combine hand-ins, training, supplies and an inn stop. Do not leave half a zone unfinished merely because an old guide says every character must enter Westfall at exactly level 10.
Roughly 10–18: move into Westfall and build your route around Sentinel Hill. Collect the local chains before a long circuit, then complete nearby objectives on the same trip. Westfall connects naturally to a Deadmines visit later in this stretch; finish the quest steps that lead there before joining a group. The dungeon being nearby does not mean every quest is available immediately.
Roughly 18–24: use Lakeshire in Redridge as the next base. Complete the manageable outdoor work first. When the remaining objectives require a stronger group, switch to Duskwood rather than spending the evening repeatedly dying on the same late-zone objective. Loch Modan is another useful early alternative if Westfall is crowded.
Roughly 22–30: alternate Darkshire’s Duskwood quests with unfinished Redridge work. Wetlands is the next major alternative if those chains get ahead of your level or you want to pair questing with Excavation Site. Darkshire is not an unconditional safe waiting area: the October notes restored Stitches’ hostility when he reaches town.
Dwarf or Gnome: Dun Morogh, Loch Modan and Wetlands
Levels 1–10/12: finish the Coldridge and Kharanos opening in Dun Morogh, then use Ironforge for class/profession training and supplies. This is the convenient Alliance opening for Hall of Thanes, whose published range is 13–18.
Roughly 10–18: quest from Thelsamar in Loch Modan. Keep your main circuit here rather than crossing the world after each small gap. Ironforge remains your nearby capital; learn the relevant flight connection before relying on a quick return.
Roughly 18–30: continue into Wetlands, with Menethil Harbor as a travel and service anchor. Work through the area’s current chains, including Forever additions, before arranging Excavation Site. If the remaining Wetlands objectives are too hard, use the Deeprun Tram between Ironforge and Stormwind and add Redridge/Duskwood work. That is a deliberate branch change, not a reason to abandon a productive Wetlands circuit.
Night Elf: Teldrassil, Darkshore and Ashenvale
Levels 1–10/12: complete the Shadowglen/Dolanaar opening and continue the Teldrassil story before departing for the mainland. Move through Rut’theran Village toward Auberdine in Darkshore.
Roughly 12–20: use Auberdine as your Darkshore base. Gather multiple nearby objectives before leaving town; coastal travel becomes expensive when every individual quest gets its own return trip.
Roughly 20–30: move into Ashenvale and work from Astranaar, with suitable Stonetalon quests as an alternative. Blackfathom Deeps can fit this western route once your group and quests are ready. If you want the Eastern Kingdoms path instead, use the new Auberdine–Stormwind boat; the old low-level Wetlands corpse run is no longer the necessary way to meet friends near Stormwind.
Alliance Skyborne: Finish Zephras Before Joining a Mainland Branch
Zephras Isle is Blizzard’s announced 1–12 starting experience. Finish its departure story, then join either the Westfall/Loch Modan branch or the Darkshore branch at a level that suits your remaining quests. Your faction was chosen at character creation; an Alliance Skyborne does not gain permission to join a Horde leveling party. See the Skyborne guide for race access and faction details.
Horde Leveling Routes from 1 to 30
Orc, Troll or Tauren: Barrens First, Then Choose a Branch
Levels 1–10/12: Orcs and Trolls work through Durotar’s Valley of Trials, Sen’jin and Razor Hill areas; Tauren work through Mulgore toward Bloodhoof Village and Thunder Bluff. Finish the useful local opening and class training before joining friends in the Barrens.
Roughly 10–20: make the Crossroads your central Barrens base. Combine objectives by direction rather than running back after each completed quest. Ratchet is a separate coastal cluster and transport hub; plan a block of work there rather than treating it as a quick detour on every Crossroads loop. Ragefire Chasm is convenient when the group is already visiting Orgrimmar; Wailing Caverns fits a later Barrens session with the relevant quests.
Roughly 20–25: choose between remaining Barrens work and Stonetalon Mountains, using Sun Rock Retreat as the Horde hub. Ashenvale is another branch when its available quests suit your level. Choose one branch for the session instead of spending most of it crossing between all three.
Roughly 25–30: continue southern Barrens work around Camp Taurajo and add Thousand Needles, with Freewind Post as the Horde base. Alternatively, finish an Ashenvale/Stonetalon route if you still have productive quests there. Razorfen Kraul is the classic dungeon candidate to investigate as your group approaches the next bracket.
Undead: Stay in the Eastern Kingdoms Through Hillsbrad
Levels 1–10/12: follow Deathknell into the Brill/Tirisfal quest areas and inspect the new local work before leaving. Undercity is your nearby training and supply stop.
Roughly 12–20: use the Sepulcher as your Silverpine base. Ruins of Lordaeron, published for 15–20, is especially convenient to combine with an Undercity visit; Shadowfang Keep is another dungeon to prepare for as your quests and group progress. You do not need to cross to the Barrens simply because a generic Horde route assumes every character started in Durotar.
Roughly 20–30: build the next stage around Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad. Use suitable remaining Silverpine quests when a Hillsbrad chain becomes difficult. Toward the upper end, begin the Dalaran dungeon access work described below, then plan your transition into Arathi or another 30s zone.
On a PvP ruleset, Hillsbrad exposes you to the opposing faction. If repeated player fights stop your progress, switching to a viable Kalimdor branch can be more useful than repeating the same corpse run. Choose the destination before paying for the crossing.
Horde Skyborne: Join the Barrens or Silverpine Route
Complete Zephras Isle’s 1–12 opening, then use your faction’s departure chain to join the mainland. Choose the Barrens branch when your friends are in Kalimdor, or Silverpine/Hillsbrad when your group is based in the Eastern Kingdoms. Do not travel between both branches just to collect every possible low-level dungeon.
Levels 30 to 60: Zone Plans and When to Move On
Past the early faction routes, much of the world is shared. Use one main zone and a nearby second zone to cover difficult chains or a shortage of available quests. The following windows deliberately overlap: a level-43 character may still have useful Riverglades work while beginning Tanaris.
| Your level | Where to base the next stage | What to do before changing regions |
|---|---|---|
| 30–35 | Arathi: Refuge Pointe for Alliance, Hammerfall for Horde. Alternatives: northern Stranglethorn or Desolace, with Nijel’s Point/Shadowprey Village as faction anchors. | Finish accessible outdoor chains before their harder group finales. In Stranglethorn, start the northern quest clusters rather than assuming every Booty Bay objective is already suitable. |
| 35–40 | Riverglades or continued Stranglethorn/Desolace. Powderfuse Port is the new sea connection; Booty Bay is Stranglethorn’s neutral southern hub. | Use the new zone’s current quests or finish your existing connected route. The Drowned City fits the Stranglethorn branch; avoid an unnecessary continent crossing just to follow this table. |
| 40–45 | Continue Riverglades, then begin suitable Tanaris, Feralas or Hinterlands work. Hubs include Gadgetzan, Feathermoon for Alliance, Camp Mojache for Horde, Aerie Peak for Alliance and Revantusk Village for Horde. | Arrange riding training and revisit your build. Krol’dok Stronghold fits the Riverglades stage. If the new zone still has appropriate chains, finish them instead of leaving at exactly 40. |
| 45–50 | Tanaris/Feralas or the Hinterlands, with Searing Gorge as an Eastern Kingdoms alternative. Gadgetzan is a useful neutral base for a Tanaris-centered stage. | Finish one region’s main clusters and prepare the quests for your chosen dungeon. Zul’Farrak, Maraudon or Uldaman may fit the branch; Alcaz Prison becomes a published 48–53 option. |
| 50–55 | Un’Goro from Marshal’s Refuge, Felwood through its available faction/Cenarion quests, or Western Plaguelands from Chillwind Camp for Alliance and the Bulwark for Horde. | Move away from enemies or chains you cannot handle consistently. Save Un’Goro power crystals if you intend to run Shaper’s Terrace later. Keep an equipment set appropriate to your dungeon role. |
| 55–60 | Eastern Plaguelands around Light’s Hope Chapel, Winterspring around Everlook, or remaining Burning Steppes/Felwood/Western Plaguelands chains. | Combine useful final quests with level-appropriate dungeon groups. Blackmaw Hold and Shaper’s Terrace are new late-level options. At 60, switch to gearing and access goals rather than continuing an XP route by habit. |
How to choose between the two late-game roads: if you are already in Tanaris, Un’Goro followed by Felwood/Winterspring keeps a clear Kalimdor sequence. If you are based around the Hinterlands and Arathi, Western then Eastern Plaguelands gives a coherent Eastern Kingdoms finish. Neither sequence guarantees enough appropriate quests without side branches, dungeon visits or unfinished earlier chains.
Traditional zone choices were cross-checked against current community route references, including the Mobalytics faction/zone overview. The recommendations here are travel choices, rather than a claim that the bottom of a client zone bracket is the ideal level for every quest.
Where Riverglades, Shen’dralas and Mount Hyjal Fit
Riverglades is the major new mid-level branch. Blizzard places much of its questing in the mid-30s to mid-40s. You can substitute it for part of a familiar Stranglethorn/Desolace/Dustwallow stretch instead of adding an entire extra zone on top of every Classic destination.
There are two useful approaches to planning the visit. If you are questing in the Eastern Kingdoms, its neighboring regions include Redridge, the Badlands, the Swamp of Sorrows and the Burning Steppes. If you are coming from Kalimdor, the new Steamwheedle route from Tanaris leads to Powderfuse Port. The port is a transport anchor, not proof that every quest in the zone begins there.

Use current faction quests to progress through Riverglades and collect the chains that send you toward Krol’dok Stronghold. Do not assume that being at the low end of the zone’s broad range means you can solo every ogre camp or late-chain objective.
Shen’dralas opens south of Desolace through the Valley of Bones. It extends the region’s exploration and stories around the centaur and Eldre’Thalas. Check the levels of the quests offered as you approach; Blizzard’s overview does not establish one precise leveling bracket that replaces every Desolace route.
Mount Hyjal belongs in your end-of-journey planning, rather than being the default replacement for your entire 50–60 route. Reach 60 through suitable quests and dungeons first, then use the pre-raid preparation guide and Hyjal Summit overview for the next goals. Blizzard’s world overview and Found Photos recap establish the new regions and connections.
Use the New Boats to Avoid Unnecessary Cross-Continent Runs
- Stormwind Harbor ↔ Auberdine: use this to join the Human/Dwarf/Gnome route from Darkshore, or to take an Eastern Kingdoms character to the Night Elf leveling branch. There is no need to reproduce the old low-level Wetlands run for this crossing.
- Menethil Harbor, Southshore and Auberdine: the new connection links Wetlands, Hillsbrad and Darkshore. Check the boat’s destination and route before boarding; do not assume each stop has its own direct ship.
- Tanaris ↔ Powderfuse Port: use the Steamwheedle route when transitioning between Kalimdor questing and Riverglades.

Set your Hearthstone at the hub you will return to for several circuits, not automatically at your original capital. For example, bind near your active Wetlands or Hillsbrad stage while questing there, then update the binding after a permanent move to Tanaris. A capital visit for training can be one planned trip rather than the destination of every recovery break.
Learn flight paths when you first reach your route’s hubs. A flight path is a learned connection, not a teleport you can assume is available just because you have seen the zone on a map. The new boats do not remove the need to discover your onward flight connections.
Dungeon Stops That Fit the Leveling Route
Run a dungeon when its quests, location and party fit your current stage. Start access chains before assembling everyone at the entrance. One run with the right quests and a useful reward is a different leveling decision from repeatedly clearing the same instance after its quest rewards are exhausted.
| Dungeon and published range | Where it fits | Prepare before the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Hall of Thanes, 13–18 | Beneath Ironforge; convenient to the Dun Morogh/Loch Modan opening. | Alliance approach from the capital. Horde travel enters Alliance territory. Do not plan an early Paladin tank around level-20 Consecration. |
| Ruins of Lordaeron, 15–20 | Ruined city above Undercity; convenient to Tirisfal/Silverpine. | Combine with your Undercity-side visit. Alliance groups must account for the Horde-territory journey. |
| Excavation Site, 24–29 in the latest overview | Wetlands, above Whelgar’s Excavation near Thelgen Rock and Dun Algaz. | Finish the relevant Wetlands chains first. The October 1 beta listed 26–31; use current client tuning for the actual group. |
| City of Dalaran, 28–33 | Alterac Mountains; pair the access work with your Hillsbrad stage. | Complete your faction’s required questline and approach through the sewers. Starting quests are below. |
| The Drowned City, 35–40 | Off Stranglethorn, west of Grom’gol. | The entrance is underwater. Meet at the intended coastal approach rather than searching the mainland for a doorway. |
| Krol’dok Stronghold, 40–45 | Riverglades. | Collect the local chains while questing in the zone, before the party leaves for the stronghold. |
| Alcaz Prison, 48–53 | Alcaz Island in Dustwallow Marsh. | Plan the island journey and assemble your group before detouring from a Tanaris/Feralas stage. |
| Blackmaw Hold, 55–60 | Azshara, beyond the formerly sealed gate. | Combine a specific dungeon goal with your late-level route; it does not require making Azshara your only questing zone. |
| Shaper’s Terrace, 58–60 | Northern Un’Goro Crater. | Bring power crystals gathered in Un’Goro for the consoles inside. Keep those materials when planning an earlier Un’Goro visit. |
These are Blizzard’s published content ranges, not independently verified minimum entry levels. Classic dungeons such as Deadmines, Wailing Caverns, Blackfathom Deeps, Scarlet Monastery, Zul’Farrak and Blackrock Depths remain additional candidates for their respective stages; the table focuses on what Forever adds.
Dalaran: Start in Southshore or Tarren Mill, Not at the Sewer Door
Alliance: speak with Emissary Jacques in Southshore and begin An Alarming Request. Horde: speak with Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill for Key to the City and Prison Break-In. Follow the required chain before joining a group that expects you to have access.
The dungeon uses the sewer approach. Horde players should not treat the sewer-key questline as permission to roam the outdoor city: the October 16 notes say the city is hostile to Horde and that the key no longer grants unrestricted open-world access. That change does not remove access to the dungeon.
Dungeon XP: Two Different October Changes Matter
October 1 reduced the extra XP from dungeon quests above normal quest values by 50%. It did not say every dungeon quest’s entire reward was halved. October 8 then increased XP from dungeon creature kills by approximately 20%.
The October 8 party fix also means the lower-level-enemy adjustment is evaluated for each player rather than using the highest-level member for everyone. However, a party member vastly above the enemies’ level still makes those kills award no XP to the party. A high-level carry is therefore not interchangeable with an appropriate-level leveling group. See the October 1 and October 8 notes.
Training, Weapons and Riding: Spend Where It Changes the Next Stage
At level 10, begin your talents and check class quests. Before leaving a capital, learn the abilities required for your immediate role. A healer needs the actual available healing and resurrection tools; a tank needs trained threat/control abilities. Belonging to a class that can perform the role does not supply untrained buttons.
At level 25, open Legacy when the class milestone awards your first point. It can unlock earlier through another completed challenge, such as skill 150 in a non-gathering primary profession. Well Rested improves rested accumulation and its cap; Thrill of Adventure restores some health and mana after non-trivial kills. Pick according to how you are playing rather than assuming your first character starts with the beta’s test allocation of 16 points.
Plan your level-40 riding visit before optional shopping. Forever shifts the up-front mount cost into riding training and grants a mount when you learn the skill. Budget around the current trainer price, not a remembered Classic split between a cheap skill and expensive separate mount. Dual Specialization also opens at 40; buying it is useful if you will actually switch roles, but it is a separate spending decision from getting around the world faster.
At 45 and 60, check the next class Legacy milestone. Those points are account-wide, while each character chooses its own allocation. You do not need to stop leveling your main to create an alt in order to benefit. The official Legacy guide and systems deep dive explain these rules.
Inspect quest rewards for your current role. Forever’s itemization updates add caster alternatives to familiar chains: Mor’ladim’s Duskwood quest offers the Ladimore Heirloom Ring, and Hemet Nesingwary’s Stranglethorn quests include the Master Hunter’s Spellsword. A caster should not skip a familiar chain solely because its old reward list looked melee-only.
Weapon checks matter differently by class. Druids now care about equipped weapon DPS in forms; Rogues using Mutilate need daggers in both hands; casters should inspect the added spell damage/healing on weapons. Compare current tooltips before replacing a weapon that enables your intended attack.
Use the relevant class guide for the mechanics that change your leveling buttons: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock or Warrior.
Use Rested XP and Camps Without Misreading the Bonus
Log out in an inn or a capital when you are ending a session and can reasonably reach one. Save your Hearthstone for a useful return from the final objective cluster rather than spending it immediately before another long run out of town.
A Camp Tent tops rested XP up to 5% of a level; it does not give a permanent 5% bonus to all XP. It has no effect when your rested pool already exceeds that amount. Do not wait at a tent expecting it to keep adding another 5% every minute.
To receive a camp feature’s benefit, sit or craft near the campfire for at least one minute. A Basic Campfire supports three contributed features, one from each contributing player, and camp features share a one-hour placement cooldown. Check what is actually missing: an Incense Candle is exclusive with Arcane Intellect, a Mana Well with Blessing of Wisdom, and a First Aid Kit with Power Word: Fortitude.
A useful caster stop might therefore provide the missing mana-regeneration benefit while you refresh supplies; duplicating an already-covered class buff adds no second copy. Cooking, Fishing and First Aid are secondary professions, so learning them does not consume either of your two primary slots. See Blizzard’s camping reference or our Camping guide for the full feature list.
What to Do When Your Route Stops Working
The remaining quests are too hard: check the enemy levels and whether the next step is a group objective. Leave that finale in the log, return to another suitable zone in the same bracket, and come back stronger or with a party. A low-level zone entrance does not make its whole quest chain equally easy.
The objective is crowded: distinguish a shared kill goal from individual item drops. A party can help with suitable kill objectives, while a personal drop quest may still require more total enemies. Work on a different nearby objective or your second zone rather than repeatedly standing at one spawn. Do not assume every quest item is multi-drop; the beta notes explicitly corrected some that should not have been.
You cannot see the next objective: open the full quest log with L, inspect prerequisites and tracking, then use M for the map. Classic preset disables quest points of interest and objective blobs by default; that setting can explain a missing map highlight. A missing highlight is not by itself proof that the quest is unavailable.
Your bags fill before the circuit ends: sell ordinary vendor loot at the hub, bank or mail materials you intend to keep, and leave room for required quest items before the next departure. Keep specific planned materials, such as Un’Goro power crystals for Shaper’s Terrace; do not keep every unfamiliar item indefinitely.
A dungeon group is still hypothetical: continue the nearby quest circuit until the necessary roles and departure are settled. Once the group is ready, finish your current local objective, return through the hub and travel with quests and supplies prepared. Do not convert half the session into idle waiting because someone said they might find a tank.
At Level 60, Change the Goal
Finish valuable chains for equipment, reputation or access rather than their XP alone. Choose the role you intend to play, keep its equipment and consumables ready, then work through pre-raid gearing and any required access chains. The Onyxia attunement guide separates the Alliance and Horde routes.
