Devastation’s Range and Talent Access Were Separate Concerns

Preheat’s February 2024 retrospective questioned both the 25-yard damage range and the practical choices in Devastation’s talent tree. Those issues concern where a character can act and which effects a loadout can access.

The source is Preheat’s February 2, 2024 editorial on Wowhead. The changes below are grounded in Blizzard’s patch notes, with the original opinions kept separate from later development.

Mobility Did Not Automatically Solve a Range Assignment

Preheat cited Mythic Nymue as an example where a ranged assignment could pull an Evoker outside its damage range. He challenged the claim that mobility alone compensated for the shorter reach.

There is a practical difference between being able to move while casting and being close enough to cast at the target. If an assigned position lies outside an ability’s range, movement freedom during another part of the encounter does not itself make that ability usable from the assigned position.

That is a positioning constraint, rather than evidence that a designer intentionally ignored the specialization. A useful encounter plan needs both the assigned location and the target’s location at that moment.

The 10.1 Changes Altered the Empower and Essence Loop

Blizzard’s Embers of Neltharion notes documented several relevant redesigns:

TalentDocumented 10.1 effect
CausalityDisintegrate damage events reduced empower cooldowns by 0.5 seconds; Pyre reduced them by 0.4 seconds per enemy hit, up to two seconds.
Arcane VigorShattering Star granted Essence Burst.
Imminent DestructionAfter Deep Breath landed, Disintegrate and Pyre cost one less Essence for ten seconds.

The developers specifically aimed to make fully channeling Disintegrate more rewarding than aggressively canceling and recasting it to exploit the earlier cooldown-reduction loop.

This was a change to the relationship between actions and cooldown progress. Repeating an old rotation instruction without its patch context could miss the behavior the redesign was intended to address.

Ground Effects Added Another Uptime Requirement

Preheat also criticized Firestorm’s reliance on enemies remaining inside its area and the talent-pathing cost of reaching supporting effects.

Access to a ground effect and time spent inside it are separate constraints. Better pathing can make the effect cheaper to select without making enemies remain stationary. Conversely, a stable target position does not reduce the points required to reach a talent.

His unfavorable talent counts were an assessment of the builds he was discussing, not measured pick-rate data for every player or a permanent list of unusable talents.

Spatial Paradox Later Became a Class-Tree Choice

Preheat wanted Spatial Paradox available beyond Augmentation. The May 9, 2024 alpha notes subsequently placed it in a class-tree choice with Time Spiral for all three Evoker specializations and increased its cooldown from two to three minutes.

This is a concrete later change relevant to that wishlist. Availability as one side of a choice did not mean every Evoker loadout automatically had both effects.

The Hero Talent Speculation Preceded the Reveals

The February article discussed Scalecommander and used the early name Ruby Adept for the other proposed direction. Blizzard’s later March 2024 preview presented Flameshaper for Devastation and Preservation.

The checked original Scalecommander preview explains the actual proposed Mass Disintegrate and Bombardments effects. Those documented talents should be distinguished from the earlier hopes for extra range, different visuals or new spells.
