Holy Priest’s Dragonflight Discussion Centered on Holy Words

Holy Words and the spells that restored their availability formed the core of Holy’s Dragonflight healing discussion. AutomaticJak’s February 5, 2024 retrospective on Wowhead welcomed that foundation while questioning passive-healing emphasis and talent diversity.

This article explains those historical mechanics alongside Blizzard’s 10.2 release notes. It covers the design context of the February review rather than offering a current healer ranking.

Two Holy Words Had Different Supporting Spells

Holy Word: Serenity and single-target recovery

Serenity supplied a strong single-target heal, with Heal and Flash Heal reducing its cooldown. That connected the immediate healing of a supporting cast to future access to another Serenity.

Holy Word: Sanctify and group recovery

Sanctify supplied an area heal, with Prayer of Healing reducing its cooldown. A supporting cast could therefore have value through both its immediate healing and the later Holy Word it helped make available.

This is useful when evaluating a spell that appears modest on a healing meter. The direct result and the cooldown progress it creates are separate contributions. Neither contribution should be assumed to replace the other completely.

Prayer of Mending’s Share of Healing Was a Design Concern

AutomaticJak felt Prayer of Mending had taken too much of the raid-healing profile relative to active spells such as Prayer of Healing. At the same time, he appreciated the interaction between its supporting talents and more Holy Word opportunities.

That was a criticism of where the specialization’s power sat, rather than an instruction to remove Prayer of Mending from a build. A largely automatic effect can still interact with active timing decisions elsewhere in the kit.

The 10.2 Changes Affected Both Healing and Cooldown Recovery

The release notes recorded these distinct changes:

  • Holy Word: Serenity: healing increased by 30%.
  • Holy Word: Sanctify: maximum allies healed changed from six to five.
  • Holy Word: Salvation: each Serenity or Sanctify reduced its cooldown by 15 seconds instead of 30 seconds.
  • Symbol of Hope: restored 10% of missing mana instead of 15% and recovered 30 seconds of a major defensive cooldown instead of 60 seconds.

Reducing the refund from each Holy Word was different from directly changing Salvation’s base cooldown. Its resulting availability depended on the number and timing of the contributing casts.

Symbol of Hope’s mana entry also specified missing mana. That is a different basis from restoring a fixed percentage of maximum mana regardless of the recipient’s current resource level.

Faster Echo of Light Ticks Did Not Mean a Larger Total Heal

The patch made Echo of Light heal every two seconds over four seconds instead of every three seconds over six seconds. The notes also reduced its healing by 15%.

Delivery speed and total amount are separate properties. A heal can arrive sooner while its overall value falls; reading only the faster interval would miss part of this change.

The Wishlist Asked for More Meaningful Alternatives

AutomaticJak wanted better competitive uses for options including Lightwell and Divine Word. He also proposed possible short-term Atonement-like healing or other ways to support difficult recovery situations. These were suggestions, not announced Holy abilities.

The later Oracle redesign history records what Blizzard subsequently changed during development. Keeping that history separate lets the February article explain its original concerns without presenting a wishlist as a released rotation.
