The Black Dragonflight, one of the original five dragonflights shaped by the titan pantheon, carries one of Azeroth's most tragic histories. Once tasked with the stewardship of the land under their Aspect, Neltharion the Earth-Warder, they fell when the Old Gods corrupted him. Neltharion became Deathwing the Destroyer, and his madness drove the flight to near-extinction. By the end of Cataclysm, only a handful of uncorrupted black dragons remained.
Sabellian, a son of Deathwing, survived the Cataclysm because he was stationed in Blade's Edge Mountains on Outland when the corruption swept through Azeroth. That distance left him uncorrupted. After Deathwing's fall, Sabellian emerged as a candidate to lead what remained of the Obsidian Brood. His leadership was never uncontested — he faced assassination attempts and internal power struggles as surviving black dragons quarreled over the flight's direction.
Wrathion, the self-proclaimed Black Prince, is the first black dragon born from a deliberately purified egg — assassins of Ravenholdt extracted and cleansed the egg before it could hatch corrupted. That process makes him unique among surviving black dragons. Wrathion's agenda has shifted across expansions: in Pandaria he orchestrated the deaths of his remaining corrupted kin, in Legion he sought to forge mortals against the demon threat, and in Dragonflight he competed with Sabellian for control of the Obsidian Brood on the Dragon Isles.
Ebyssian, known to Highmountain Tauren as Ebonhorn, is the oldest surviving uncorrupted black dragon outside Outland. He spent centuries living among mortals under a disguised form, serving as a spiritual elder to the Highmountain tribe. When the Black Dragonflight's leadership crisis reached the Dragon Isles, Ebyssian's long years of quiet service distinguished him from the more aggressive postures of Sabellian and Wrathion.
By the events of the Dragonflight expansion, players could align with either Sabellian or Wrathion during the Obsidian Citadel storyline on the Waking Shores. The choice influenced the flight's composition of the Obsidian Brood faction. Both figures remained active throughout the Dragon Isles campaign, and the Black Dragonflight's presence at the Seat of the Aspects signaled their return as a recognised power — small in numbers, but no longer hunted to extinction.
