The Upgrade That Connected Soar to Dragonriding
This guide records the original Patch 10.2.5 rules from January 2024. Seeds of Renewal upgraded the Dracthyr racial ability Soar with Dragonriding’s Vigor resource and flight abilities. It did not turn a Dracthyr character into a collectible mount.
Blizzard’s released update notes identify two new passives and two requirements. Those are the useful starting points when comparing an old Soar description with the upgraded version.
What the Two Passives Changed
The passives performed different jobs. Empowered Soaring supplied the flight-system integration; Expedited Takeoff supplied the shorter cooldown.

A short cooldown and a flight resource are separate limits. Waiting for Soar to become available is not the same task as managing Vigor during flight. The upgrade connected the racial to that resource system rather than promising unlimited acceleration.
Check Both Prerequisites
The January 2024 notes required Dragonriding learned on the account and the Evoker’s Forbidden Reach starting experience completed. One was account progress; the other concerned the character you were playing.
- Confirm that Dragonriding had been unlocked on the account. Owning or creating a Dracthyr did not, by itself, prove this separate condition.
- Confirm that this Evoker had finished the starting experience. An account’s other characters could not stand in for that character-specific requirement.
- Then compare the spellbook with the two passive names above, rather than looking for the removed Familiar Skies entry.
“Forbidden Reach starting experience” means the Dracthyr introduction. It should not be replaced with a requirement to finish every later outdoor quest in the region.
Soar, Glide and Essence Describe Different Things
Blizzard’s original Dracthyr preview distinguishes Glide, which slows a fall, from Soar, which launches the character into aerial movement. It also describes Essence as the Evoker spell resource shown near the character portrait.
If a guide tells you to watch Essence to maintain flight, it has mixed together class combat and travel systems. Likewise, pressing the jump key to Glide is not the same action as activating Soar.
Keep the Patch Boundary Clear
These requirements explain the 2024 upgrade; they are not a complete specification for later starting levels, class choices or flight unlocks. The later War Within pre-expansion notes renamed Dragonriding to Skyriding and changed its progression. They also explicitly retained mounts that did not support the new flight style.
When returning after an expansion, use the current spellbook and flight documentation together. Do not infer a permanent restriction from an old patch’s prerequisites or assume that “many mounts” means every mount.
