Druid Flight Form Gained Dynamic Flying in The War Within
When The War Within launched in August 2024, Blizzard delivered one of the most requested quality-of-life changes for Druids: full Skyriding (dynamic flying) support for Flight Form. For the first time, Druids could use their iconic travel ability with the momentum-based, vigor-driven mechanics introduced in Dragonflight, without needing a separate mount.
How Skyriding Worked in Flight Form
With The War Within pre-patch on July 23, 2024, Druid Flight Form was updated to support Skyriding identically to any regular Skyriding mount. Druids built speed through dives, used Skyward Ascent and other abilities to gain height, and spent Vigor to maintain momentum β all within their native shapeshifted form.
The flight style toggle was accessible through the Mount Journal (Shift-P) under the Skyriding icon, via Switch Flight Style. This let players choose between Skyriding and Steady Flight. One important constraint: the toggle required being on the ground and could not be changed mid-air.
Easy Transition for Experienced Skyriders
Druids who had already mastered Dragonriding during Dragonflight found the transition straightforward. Flight Form responded to the same keybinds and muscle memory. In Khaz Algar, Skyriding became available shortly after the introductory scenario, with Steady Flight unlocking at max level (80). Older zones supported both flight styles from the outset.
New Flying Challenges
The momentum system introduced a genuine skill curve. Maintaining Vigor, chaining dives for speed, and navigating terrain efficiently rewarded practice. Players accustomed to static flight had an adjustment period, particularly for gathering professions where hover-and-collect playstyle was the norm.
The Global Toggle Controversy
The flight-style toggle applied globally β it switched both regular mounts and Druid Flight Form simultaneously. Druids had historically held an advantage: an instant-cast flying form that made herbalism and mining faster than using any mount. Under the new system, switching to Steady Flight for gathering affected all other mounts too, with no per-form independent toggle available.
This frustrated a vocal portion of the Druid community, who felt the change eroded a class-identity advantage that had existed for years. Blizzard's reasoning was centred on keeping the flight system consistent across all travel methods.
Steady Flight and Pathfinder
A common misconception at launch: Steady Flight in The War Within was not gated behind Pathfinder. All players could use the old static flying style. It unlocked at max level in Khaz Algar but was freely available in all prior-expansion zones from day one β a meaningful departure from earlier expansions where Pathfinder achievements were required to unlock flying at all.
What Shipped in August 2024
During the Spring 2024 alpha, Blizzard's Senior Gameplay Software Engineer confirmed Druid Flight Form would gain Skyriding support, including the ground-only toggle restriction. What shipped in the pre-patch and full launch on August 26, 2024 matched the alpha design: full Skyriding parity for Flight Form, a global toggle, and no independent per-form setting.
The War Within closed its cycle in early 2026. Midnight, the next expansion, launched on March 2, 2026, making The War Within the previous expansion as of that date. The Druid Flight Form Skyriding feature shipped as intended and remained active throughout The War Within's full run.
