The Healer Discussion Took Place on the 10.2 PTR
Mana, health-pool recovery and burst damage were central questions for healers preparing for Dragonflight Season 3. Wowhead published a discussion with Squishei, Automaticjak and Theun on September 25, 2023, followed by Squishei’s news post on September 27.
The conversation concerned early Patch 10.2 testing. The guests reported some improvements to single-target healing while still questioning burst damage and how well the available tests represented harder content.

Three Different Problems Can Make Healing Feel Hard
Running out of mana
Mana limits how long a healing pattern can continue. A spell can recover a health bar effectively and still be too expensive to repeat throughout a long encounter. Conversely, an efficient pattern can leave too little healing available during a short emergency.
Recovering a larger health pool
A higher raw healing number does not necessarily restore a larger fraction of an ally’s health. If maximum health grows faster than the heal, returning that ally to full health takes more work. This is why comparing only healing-per-second totals can miss a change in recovery speed.
Surviving damage before a heal can land
A brief lethal burst gives the healer a different task from sustained damage. Prevention, a personal defensive or a stopped enemy cast can affect whether there is a surviving target to heal. Improving a healing spell does not itself create more reaction time between enemy attacks.
What the Final Patch Notes Changed
Blizzard’s Guardians of the Dream release notes state an intention to make mana management matter more and reduce overhealing. Their released changes give concrete context to the earlier discussion:
- Rashok’s Molten Heart: mana restoration reduced by 70%.
- Restoration Shaman spot healing: Healing Surge and Healing Wave each increased by 30%.
- Chain Heal: healing increased by 20%, with its cost reduced from 6% to 5.6% of base mana.
- Shaman mana supply: Resurgence restored 20% less mana; Mana Tide Totem’s regeneration increase changed from 100% to 80%.
These changes pulled different levers. Stronger individual heals and reduced resource restoration can exist in the same patch; neither one alone describes the full experience of an extended fight.
Why the Guests Kept Qualifying Their Conclusions
The discussion noted that heroic raid tests could reveal too little damage to judge the eventual Mythic healing demands. Its dungeon impressions were also based on limited early testing, with concern about how burst damage would scale.
Those limits are part of the original feedback. The video is useful for understanding the questions healers were asking before release; it does not establish a final Season 3 class ranking or a promise that every dungeon’s difficulty had been settled.
