Blizzard has recently unveiled the highly anticipated Hero Talents for several classes in World of Warcraft, including Priest, Hunter, Mage, and Druid. These Hero Talents are part of the new War Within expansion and serve as an additional form of character progression, offering new powers and enhancing class identities. To gather valuable feedback from the community, Blizzard has shared their goals for Hero Talents and provided a sneak peek at what players can expect from them.
What are Hero Talents?
Hero Talents are self-contained talent trees that become accessible to players at level 71. They build upon the existing abilities and talents of each class and specialization, allowing players to choose a single Hero Talent tree to activate for their character. These talents can be freely changed, similar to how class talents can currently be swapped. Each class has three Hero Talent trees, except for Druids and Demon Hunters, who have four and two trees respectively. Each specialization has access to two Hero Talent trees, which are shared among two specializations. For example, warriors can choose between the Slayer, Colossus, and Mountain Thane trees, with each specialization having access to a different combination of these trees.
In each Hero Talent tree, there are 11 nodes. The first node is unlocked at level 71, and players earn one talent point per level from 71 to 80, allowing them to unlock all talents in the tree by level 80. Starter builds will be available, and saved builds will retain the Hero Talent choices. Blizzard aims to provide equal utility and defensive bonuses across all Hero Talent trees, with some tailored for tanking specializations to provide more defensive benefits. Each tree will also feature choice nodes, giving players the opportunity to choose between two options.
What to Expect from Hero Talents
Each Hero Talent tree begins with a "keystone" talent that introduces the core concept and mechanics of the tree. This keystone talent can be a new ability, an enhancement to an existing ability or cooldown, or a triggered buff. At the bottom of each tree is a "capstone" talent that further develops the core themes or provides additional power to the keystone talent. Defensive bonuses and utility will be offered or modified in each tree, catering to all specializations. Blizzard aims for all trees to have equal levels of utility and defensiveness.
Hero Talents are designed to add significant damage or healing throughput without overshadowing the existing class and specialization talents. Visual effects will also be added to classes, enhancing the class fantasies. However, these visual enhancements will not result in complete reworks of the classes. The core identity of each class and specialization will remain intact.
Maintaining Freedom to Choose
Blizzard emphasizes the importance of player choice when it comes to selecting Hero Talent trees. The goal is for both options to feel equally effective in raid dungeons, Mythic+, and PvP. While some players may prioritize total throughput, Blizzard aims to balance the Hero Talent trees to ensure that players can choose their preferred playstyle without feeling obligated to choose a certain tree for optimal performance.
Certain Hero Talents may require specific talents from the class or specialization trees to access their powers. This is done to align the flavor and theme of the Hero Talent tree with the corresponding talents. However, the number of required or enhanced talents will always be kept minimal, allowing players to still have freedom in customizing their class build.
How Hero Talent Concepts Were Chosen
Blizzard took several factors into consideration when selecting the Hero Talent concepts. Each concept needed to be suitable for both of the specializations that can use it. Some concepts were built upon similarities in abilities or themes between the two specializations, while others introduced entirely new themes appropriate for both specializations.
Another important consideration was maintaining the combat role and gear utilization of each class. Iconic Warcraft character archetypes were carefully evaluated to ensure that their fantasies could be realized within the existing classes. However, abilities that didn't align with a class's toolkit were excluded. Additionally, Blizzard wanted to ensure that all races and factions could embody these iconic archetypes, allowing players to see themselves in their characters.
Gameplay and Hero Talents
Blizzard has established several goals for the gameplay experience with Hero Talents in World of Warcraft. The aim is for Hero Talents to enhance the core characteristics of each class, giving players a twist or boost to their preferred gameplay style. The things that players care about in their rotation should still be important, and Hero Talents should not overshadow these aspects.
Hero Talent trees may introduce new behavior or bonuses to existing abilities, such as improved bonuses to specific spells or easier maintenance of important buffs. Complexity is being carefully monitored to avoid overwhelming players with a multitude of new abilities or complex maintenance buffs. Most Hero Talent trees will not introduce new buttons to the action bar, with the complexity primarily residing in the class and specialization talent trees.
Blizzard also ensures that Hero Talent trees provide meaningful choices, and some talents may require specific talents from the class and specialization trees. However, the overall aim is to strike a balance between adding fun and depth to the gameplay experience without burdening players with excessive complexity.
