Stormwind Portal Bug in WoW's 2024 Hearthstone Event

Stormwind Portal Bug in WoW's 2024 Hearthstone Event

A short look back at the Stormwind portal over-spawn bug in WoW's March 2024 Hearthstone event, and how players farmed Dr. Boom on Alliance characters.

Why the Stormwind Portals Over-Spawned

During the WoW Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary event in March 2024, an Ominous Portal was supposed to open on a shared timer in Stormwind City, Durotar, and Valdrakken. In practice the Stormwind portals spawned far more often than the others, leaving at least one Alliance portal active during stretches when the Horde and Valdrakken cities had nothing up. It was never clear whether the Stormwind side was firing too often or the others too rarely, but the imbalance was obvious in the Group Finder, where Alliance listings stayed full and Horde queues ran dry.

Farming the Event on an Alliance Character

The workaround players settled on was to roll an Alliance character, head to Stormwind, and search the Group Finder for "Stormwind Portal" groups. With a portal almost always up, you could chain runs instead of waiting out an hourly timer on the Horde side. Each run sent a wave of three Hearthstone bosses out of the portal, ending with Dr. Boom, the boss that carried the loot.

One detail decided whether the run counted. You had to deal damage to Dr. Boom yourself to earn credit, so landing a few hits before he died was the difference between a reward roll and nothing. Spots were also scarce, since cosmetic demand meant group leaders were swamped with invites the moment a group formed. Getting in took patience and a quick invite finger.

A Bug That Got Hotfixed

Blizzard acknowledged the imbalance and adjusted the spawn cadence with hotfixes on March 12 and March 14, 2024. By the time the event ended on March 22, the portals were behaving closer to the intended shared timer. The Stormwind farming window was a short-lived quirk rather than a permanent feature, and anyone who used it banked their Compass Rose mount attempts and event cosmetics before the timer normalized.

The whole thing was tied to a one-time event that has not returned. The Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary portals, the Stormwind bug, and the rewards they handed out are all history now, recorded here for players who remember chasing Dr. Boom across a suspiciously busy Stormwind.
