In the epic saga of The War Within, players will be faced with a new enemy type known as the Skardyn. These fearsome, void-corrupted dwarves first appeared in the novel Night of the Dragon and have a mysterious connection to the Harbinger of the Void, Xal'atath. The Skardyn play a crucial role in the storyline, serving as antagonists and posing a formidable threat to players.
The Skardyn are no ordinary dwarves - they have been twisted and corrupted by the void into monstrous beings. As players embark on The War Within, they will encounter these aggressive foes for the first time. It becomes clear that the Skardyn's origin is linked to Xal'atath herself, the enigmatic and powerful Harbinger of the Void.
Early on in The War Within's storyline, players discover that the Earthen - a faction of stone-based beings - are grappling with broken machinery. This malfunction prevents them from archiving their memories or recharging. In The Ringing Deeps storyline, players uncover how Xal'atath exploits this problem to manipulate the Earthen for her own sinister purposes. She offers an artifact to repair the Awakening Machine, which can restore the Earthen from their stasis.
The High Speaker of the Ringing Deeps, High Speaker Eirich, is initially apprehensive yet enticed by Xal'atath's proposition:

Although Xal'atath's words hint at her true intentions - "perfecting" rather than merely "repairing" the machine, and promising the Earthen will be "improved" - the desperate High Speaker fails to notice. Consequently, the Earthen are transformed into obedient Skardyn, serving only Xal'atath. From this, it's evident that the creation of Skardyn is a trademark of Xal'atath's malevolence.
Interestingly, this is not the first occurrence of Xal'atath's involvement in the creation of the Skardyn. In the novel Night of the Dragon, the Skardyn are revealed to be descendants of Dark Iron dwarves who followed the sorceress queen, Modgud, during the War of the Three Hammers. Modgud wielded the powerful dagger known as Xal'atath and used its dark magic to bring the shadows of Grim Batol to life.
Modgud's plans were eventually thwarted, leading to her demise along with most of her followers, forsaken by the very dagger they relied on. However, some of her surviving Dark Iron comrades took refuge in Grim Batol, a stronghold abandoned due to Modgud's curse. Over time, the curse corrupted these Dark Iron dwarves, transforming them into the Skardyn we encounter today.
What is significant about this connection is that Xal'atath's dark magic at Grim Batol seems to be the catalyst for the creation of the Dark Iron Skardyn. Additionally, the fact that both Dark Iron dwarves and the War Within's Earthen undergo the same transformation reveals that Xal'atath's magic can affect titan-forged creatures, regardless of whether they have been influenced by the Curse of Flesh. Xal'atath's power and influence are undeniable, making her a formidable force to be reckoned with.
