To mark 20 years of World of Warcraft, Blizzard opened pre-purchase on The War Within 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition through the Blizzard Gear Store. The set bundled commemorative physical items with the expansion. Buyers who had already purchased The War Within digitally received a Battle.net balance reimbursement to use in-game or on Battle.net.

The War Within alpha test sign-up opened that week, with selected players invited to explore the new zones, meet the Earthen allied race, and stress-test the expansion's systems. Sign-ups ran through the Battle.net account flow, and invitations went out in waves throughout the alpha.
