Choose What You Want from Day of the Dead

WoW's Day of the Dead combines a short pet quest, a dance achievement, seasonal vendor collectibles and costume battles. For the Macabre Marionette, bring bread and use marigolds to see a Cheerful Spirit. For the Cliffside Wylderdrake: Day of the Dead Armor, budget 50,000 gold for the documented vendor purchase, rather than farming a boss.

This guide covers WoW Retail. Blizzard's latest published recurring-event overview lists November 1–3 for Retail and a separate November 1–2 listing for Classic. Check the in-game calendar for your region's precise start and end times. We have not verified a new 2026 reward announcement or a single global launch timestamp.

Plan Your Visit and Budget

The expensive dragon manuscript, costume toys and bread quest serve different goals. You do not need to buy everything from Chapman to earn the pet or the dance achievement.

Your goalBring or buyWhat completes it
Dead Man’s PartyNo costume purchase requiredTarget Catrina and /dance.
Macabre MarionetteBread of the Dead and a marigold itemComplete The Grateful Dead for an eligible Cheerful Spirit.

Vendor prices and collection details are cross-checked against the community-maintained Day of the Dead reference. Confirm the active vendor's inventory and price before purchasing during the next event.

Find Catrina, Chapman and the Right Spirit

Blizzard's recurring holiday overview places the festivities in capital-city graveyards. Catrina is the skeleton dancer; Chapman is the nearby vendor. Finding those two is enough for the dance and shopping, but the pet quest also depends on seeing an eligible spirit.

For The Grateful Dead, use your race's relevant capital graveyard or a neutral event location such as Shattrath or Northrend Dalaran. The community reference records neutral-city access for pandaren, whose faction capital does not provide their own racial spirit. A spirit missing at an arbitrary capital is a reason to check location and eligibility, not to keep talking to Catrina.

📌 Separate the NPC jobs: Catrina gives the dance interaction, Chapman sells supplies, and the Cheerful Spirit handles The Grateful Dead. Turn in the bread to the spirit after making it visible.

Get the Macabre Marionette, Step by Step

Blizzard's holiday activity guide confirms the core interaction: use marigolds to reveal the spirit, then give it Bread of the Dead for the pet. Its older event dates are superseded by the newer Retail overview; the quest interaction remains the useful part of that reference.

  1. Go to an eligible event graveyard while Day of the Dead is active. Bring Simple Flour and Ice Cold Milk if you intend to cook.
  2. Buy Recipe: Bread of the Dead from Chapman and learn it on a character with basic Cooking. Have the ingredients ready rather than assuming an ordinary supply vendor is next to every event NPC.
  3. Cook Bread of the Dead at the nearby Ghostly Fire. You can also obtain prepared bread instead of baking it yourself.
  4. Buy and use Orange Marigold or Bouquet of Orange Marigolds to reveal the otherwise invisible spirits.
  5. Talk to the eligible Cheerful Spirit, accept The Grateful Dead and hand over the bread.
  6. Learn the rewarded Macabre Marionette and check your Pet Journal. The collected battle pet is permanent, rather than a companion that disappears when the holiday ends.

If the quest is absent, first check the marigold effect and your location. Then consider whether the character already completed the quest. A returning holiday does not automatically make a completed quest available again.

Buy the Cliffside Wylderdrake Armor and Cosmetics

Cliffside Wylderdrake: Day of the Dead Armor is a Drakewatcher Manuscript for one dragon mount's customization. It does not award a new mount, change every skyriding mount or unlock the Cliffside Wylderdrake itself. The manuscript reference lists Chapman, 50,000 gold and the Rostrum of Transformation.

Learn the manuscript, then select the armor for your Cliffside Wylderdrake at a Rostrum of Transformation. Check your existing customization collection before spending gold on a reward originally added in 2023.

📌 Buy the correct reward: the 50,000-gold Cliffside Wylderdrake manuscript is a vendor customization. It is not a random mount drop or a reward for the contender achievement chain.

Blizzard's 2025 overview also added three cosmetic families in Marigold, Starflower, Lotus, Orchid and Heartblossom styles. Preview each family for the look you want rather than treating the flower names as separate gameplay bonuses.

Cosmetic familyWhat to look for
Crown of the DeadAn ornamental crown; preview the matching flower style.
DeathmaskA face-covering cosmetic in the corresponding flower theme.
Remembrance VeilA veil variation for a different silhouette.

The 2025 additions remain the latest specifically documented holiday reward set at this review. Check the 2026 vendor when the event opens before assuming the stock has changed.

Earn the Costume Achievements

Chapman sells five permanent contender toys: Blooming Rose, Night Demon, Purple Phantom, Santo's Sun and Snowy Owl. One costume is enough to participate. Both you and your opponent must be wearing contender outfits, and you use the costume's bonus combat action rather than treating an ordinary PvP kill as holiday credit.

AchievementRequired defeated contenders

Vientos!20
Calavera50

The permanent costumes can be used after the holiday, so prioritize buying the toy while Chapman is available; you do not need to finish all 50 wins in the same visit. Arrange the activity with other players and watch achievement progress to confirm credit.

📌 Leave sanctuary areas for costume combat: Shattrath and Dalaran are useful neutral pet-quest stops, but sanctuary restrictions prevent the damage needed for contender battles there.

Trader’s Tender and Overlapping Holiday Tasks

Check the active Traveler's Log for the current month's listed activities and progress rewards. A holiday action contributes when the log lists it as a task; The Grateful Dead and a costume win are not universal direct Trader's Tender payouts.

If you are collecting several late-October and early-November rewards, use the separate Hallow’s End housing and reward guide for that event's requirements. Its currencies and purchases are separate from Chapman’s Day of the Dead inventory.
