Profession Knowledge Points in The War Within: How the System Worked
When The War Within launched in August 2024, players discovered the Profession Knowledge Point system had changed significantly from Dragonflight. Gathering Professions kept familiar quest-based methods, Enchanting gained a hybrid gathering mechanic, and Crafting Professions ran into a missing quest type that caused widespread confusion in the first reset week. Here is what each profession category offered during that launch window.
Gathering Professions: Familiar Quest Flow
Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning
Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning Knowledge Points worked the same way they did in Dragonflight. Players picked up weekly quests from the Profession trainer in Dornogal, the main hub city. Quests like Light and Shadow (Herbalism) and Cinder and Storm (Mining) asked players to collect specific materials, which could then be turned in for Knowledge Points. The items dropped in the field or were purchasable on the Auction House for those who preferred to skip the gathering step.
Enchanting: A Gathering Hybrid
Enchanting crossed into gathering-profession territory. Using the Disenchant skill on eligible gear pieces yielded weekly Knowledge Point drops: items like Fleeting Arcane Manifestation and Gleaming Telluric Crystal. This mirrored how Herbalism earned Knowledge Points from plants, but through disenchanting instead of picking. Enchanters could still participate in Patron Crafting Orders on top of this, earning Knowledge Points through the Crafting path as well.
Crafting Professions: Missing Quest Type at Launch
Crafting Professions (Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring, and others) had only one Knowledge Point source available during the first week: Public Work Orders and Personal Work Orders fulfilled through the Crafting Order system in Dornogal. In Dragonflight, crafters had a second quest type involving item turn-ins at the Profession trainer, but those turn-in quests were absent from the TWW trainers in the first reset.
| Profession | Type | Knowledge Points Source |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Crafting | Public and Personal Work Orders |
| Enchanting | Hybrid | Disenchant drops + Patron Crafting Orders |
| Herbalism | Gathering | Light and Shadow quest (Dornogal trainer) |
| Tailoring | Crafting | Public and Personal Work Orders |
Whether the missing item turn-ins were a bug or an intentional design change was not confirmed at launch. Many crafters experienced a secondary issue: Patron Crafting Orders, which were weekly NPC-issued orders meant to grant currencies like Artisan's Acuity and Profession-specific Knowledge items like Glimmer of Tailoring Knowledge, were not appearing for a large portion of players during that first week, compounding the confusion.
What This Meant for Early TWW Crafters
The practical effect was that crafting-profession players hit the first reset of The War Within with fewer Knowledge Points than expected, putting them behind in their Profession skill trees. Blizzard monitored the situation through the opening weeks and issued hotfixes as the expansion settled. Players who planned their Knowledge Point sources around the Dragonflight model found they needed to adjust expectations and lean more heavily on Work Orders until the turn-in quests went live.
