War Within Season 1: Four New Mythic+ Affixes Explained

War Within Season 1: Four New Mythic+ Affixes Explained

The War Within Season 1 replaced reactive affixes with four passive modifiers — Reckless, Thorned, Attuned, and Focused — tied to mob mana type.

Dungeon Difficulty Changes in The War Within Season 1

The War Within Season 1 continued the dungeon difficulty overhaul Blizzard tested in Dragonflight Season 4, reshuffling how Normal, Heroic, and Mythic dungeons aligned with challenge and rewards:

  • Normal: All eight War Within dungeons remained accessible, with mechanics unchanged from launch.
  • Heroic: Tuned to match a Dragonflight-era baseline Mythic difficulty. Rewards increased and the mode kept a seasonal dungeon roster. Heroic remained queueable and did not include Mythic-level mechanics.
  • Mythic (no keystones): Equivalent in challenge to a previous season’s +10 keystone level, without timers or affixes. A daily lockout replaced the previous weekly schedule.

The three-tier structure gave players a clear gear-progression ladder from queueable Heroic through Mythic before entering the keystone system.

Mythic+ Keystone Difficulty Compression

The keystone scale in Season 1 inherited Dragonflight Season 4’s compressed numbering. Lower key numbers no longer mapped to the same relative difficulty as in earlier seasons:

Keystone LevelComparable Previous DifficultyAffixes Introduced
+2Previous season +11Fortified or Tyrannical
+5Previous season +15First passive affix added
+10Previous season +20Full passive affix set active

A +10 clear in The War Within Season 1 carried the same historical weight as a +20 clear in earlier seasons, reflected in the Keystone Master cutoff at the same key number.

Four New Passive Affixes

Season 1 retired several reactive affixes and introduced four passive modifiers tied to enemy mana type. Each rewarded damage-type awareness over real-time reaction:

  • Reckless: Non-boss enemies without mana ignored some armor but took increased damage — incentivising burst over mitigation-heavy pulls.
  • Thorned: Physical damage on non-boss, no-mana enemies rebounded to the attacker. Those enemies also took extra holy and shadow damage.
  • Attuned: Non-boss enemies with mana dealt enhanced magic damage and were more susceptible to nature and bleed effects.
  • Focused: Non-boss, mana-using creatures gained increased haste but took extra frost and fire damage.

The passive affix design shifted dungeon challenge from moment-to-moment interrupts and dispels toward strategic pull composition — a meaningful change from divisive reactive affixes like Quaking and Spiteful that had frustrated players in earlier seasons.

Players working through The War Within Season 1 key ladder can explore Mythic+ carry options to push rating and unlock the weekly Great Vault slot.
