Warbands and Hero Talents Previewed at BlizzCon 2023
At BlizzCon 2023, World of Warcraft game director Morgan Day joined a group interview with WoW fan sites to share early details about The War Within. One of the central topics was Warbands, an account-wide system designed to be evergreen across multiple expansions. Within Warbands, a new item type called Warbound let players send gear across characters on the same account. Hard-to-obtain achievements such as Famed Gladiator remained character-specific, while gold, currencies, and crafting resources would be shared through the Warband bank.
Delves and Outdoor Rewards in The War Within
Morgan Day confirmed the Delve system as a new outdoor endgame content category with an upgrade system and currency rewards. Outdoor Vault rewards were confirmed not to grant top-end raid-track gear — the team was still determining the upper ceiling for outdoor rewards at the time. Queues were not planned for Delves; the design goal was to let players group freely or tackle content solo without a matchmaking lock.
What Came of These Announcements
When The War Within launched in August 2024, all the systems previewed in this interview shipped. Warbands introduced account-wide progression and Warbound gear into the loot economy, and Delves debuted as a tiered solo and small-group outdoor content layer. The BlizzCon 2023 Morgan Day interview remains one of the clearest early records of the expansion's design direction before release.
