The Data and Context
During the first week of Dragonflight Season 4 (the week of April 23, 2024), Vault of the Incarnates was the active Awakened raid. Warcraft Logs Mythic difficulty data at the 95th percentile offered a snapshot of which specs performed at the top end during that first week of the season.
Several biases affect how to read this data. Specs considered weak are played less, which compresses their apparent ceiling. Strong-spec mains cluster near the top, widening the gap further. Parse funneling and early-season gear disparity (not every group had the same tier availability) also influenced rankings in the opening reset.

Marksmanship Hunter led the overall chart by a significant margin in week one, with Windwalker Monk closely behind. Both topped the rankings consistently through the early weeks of Season 4. Beast Mastery Hunter jumped roughly 20 spots to the top five, while Shadow Priest saw a sharp drop of five positions from its prior standing.
Boss-Only Damage — Different Story at the Top
Boss-only damage rankings — which strip out cleave on adds and trash pulls — painted a different picture for Week 1. The specs optimised for sustained single-target throughput moved up significantly in this view. Unholy Death Knight held the top position in boss-only damage, followed by Beast Mastery Hunter and Fire Mage. Marksmanship Hunter, which dominated overall damage on trash-heavy encounters, fell in the boss-only ranking as expected given its reliance on multi-target setup.
The gap between overall and boss-only rankings is worth tracking across a season, as it highlights which specs are trading AoE strength for single-target specialisation and vice versa.
What These Rankings Meant for Season 4
Season 4 used the Awakened system, rotating all three Dragonflight raids on a weekly schedule. Each week's Awakened raid differed in encounter design — Vault of the Incarnates favored sustained damage, while Aberrus had more cleave-heavy phases. The opening Vault week tended to inflate specs with strong sustained output and compress those that rely on funnel builds or opportunistic cleave windows.
Class balance in Dragonflight Season 4 shifted considerably across the first several resets as players acquired gear from the Awakened vendors. These Week 1 rankings capture a snapshot of the opening state before the catch-up cycle began in earnest.
