The War Within Key Art: A First Look
Blizzard unveiled the key art for The War Within ahead of the expansion's BlizzCon 2023 reveal. The artwork placed three iconic characters together: Thrall, former Warchief of the Horde; Anduin, King of Stormwind; and Alleria Windrunner, one of the Void Elves' most powerful wielders of the Void.
The composition showed the trio against a war-torn underground landscape, consistent with the expansion's theme of a conflict unfolding beneath Azeroth's surface. The lighting and colour treatment gave the piece a heavy, foreboding tone that matched the Worldsoul Saga's opening chapter.
Characters Featured in the Key Art
Each of the three characters carried specific significance to the expansion's narrative:
- Thrall, former Warchief of the Horde, one of WoW's most recognisable figures, central to the underground storyline of Khaz Algar.
- Anduin Wrynn, King of Stormwind, still recovering from the events of Shadowlands; The War Within marked a key arc in his post-Jailer story.
- Alleria Windrunner, High Elf ranger and Void wielder, playable as a Hero character in The War Within's story.
The three characters appeared together for the first time on the key art, signalling a cross-faction collaboration central to The War Within's plot.
What The War Within Delivered
The War Within launched in August 2024 and took players underground into Khaz Algar β an ancient dwarf kingdom beneath the surface of the Eastern Kingdoms. The expansion raised the level cap to 80 and introduced four new zones and eight new dungeons:
| Name | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Ara-Kara, City of Echoes | Dungeon | Azj-Kahet |
| City of Threads | Dungeon | Azj-Kahet |
| Darkflame Cleft | Dungeon | Hallowfall |
| The Dawnbreaker | Dungeon | Isle of Dorn |
| Nerub'ar Palace | Raid (9 bosses) | Azj-Kahet |
Additional dungeons included The Stonevault, Priory of the Sacred Flame, Cinderbrew Meadery, and the returning Grim Batol. The four new zones (Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and Azj-Kahet) were all set underground in Khaz Algar.
Character Progression and New Systems
The War Within overhauled several long-standing systems alongside the new zones and dungeons. The Hero Talents feature added a third customization layer on top of the existing talent tree, letting players choose spec-specific archetypes. Account-wide Renown removed the per-alt faction grind, and Transmog unlocks became account-wide from any character. The Earthen, a Dwarf-derived allied race, joined both Alliance and Horde factions for the first time in Khaz Algar. Final Thoughts
The War Within's key art did what good expansion art should: it put three established characters in a single frame and made their presence together feel intentional. Thrall, Anduin, and Alleria's visual pairing signalled a story built around cross-faction stakes, underground conflict, and the beginning of the Worldsoul Saga. The expansion launched in August 2024 and concluded its cycle in early 2026 before Midnight arrived as the next chapter.
