BlizzCon 2023: Anne Stickney & Tina Wang on The War Within

Wowhead's BlizzCon 2023 interview with Anne Stickney and Tina Wang on The War Within expansion's Arathi humans, Hero Talents, and Delves.

Introducing The War Within

At BlizzCon 2023, Wowhead sat down exclusively with Senior Narrative Designer Anne Stickney and Associate Art Director Tina Wang to preview the then-upcoming World of Warcraft expansion. The conversation covered the Arathi humans, the Worldsoul Saga, Hero Talents, and Delves, all of which launched with The War Within in August 2024 and defined what became the expansion before Midnight.

Ancient Tribes and a Falling Star

Stickney and Wang revealed that The War Within would introduce the Arathi humans, descendants of a splintered tribe of the original Arathi Empire. Devoted entirely to the Light, they had remained hidden for centuries until a vision guided them to Harrowfall, where a falling star marked their re-emergence into the conflict. Their holy-flame-powered airships made them immediate military assets in the war against the forces of darkness beneath Azeroth.

The developers were careful to distinguish the Harrowfall crystal from the mysterious sword in the expansion's key art — two separate story threads, despite visual similarity.

The Sword and the Worldsoul Saga

The sword featured in The War Within's key art was confirmed as a central piece of the Worldsoul Saga — the three-expansion arc spanning The War Within (2024), Midnight (2026), and The Last Titan. Stickney emphasised that story beats would carry across all three installments, creating a serialised narrative rather than self-contained expansion plots.

Character Arcs: Anduin and the Domination Aftermath

Stickney and Wang discussed Anduin Wrynn's arc in depth. The expansion picked up the threads of his Domination magic trauma from Shadowlands — Anduin had been forced to commit terrible acts under the Jailer's control and spent The War Within grappling with his sense of unworthiness of the Light and the darkness inside himself. It was one of the expansion's most personal character journeys.

Hero Talents and Customisation Depth

The War Within introduced Hero Talents as a third talent-tree layer alongside the existing class and specialisation trees. Blizzard designed them to be predominantly passive, reducing the new-ability burden on newer players while giving experienced players meaningful build variation. Players could choose between two Hero Talent paths per specialisation, each emphasising a different playstyle within the same spec.

Delves: Flexible Content for Time-Pressed Players

Delves arrived as solo-to-small-group content (1–5 players) averaging 10–15 minutes per run, with no timer — purpose-built for players who couldn't schedule a full group session. They offered genuine progression through tiered rewards and were entirely role-agnostic, removing the tank/healer gatekeeping common to group content. Drawing on Mists of Pandaria-era scenarios, Blizzard built Delves to feel purposeful rather than filler. Players looking to push the highest-tier Delves from the start can browse WoW Delves carry options for a fast track into the Gilded Stash reward tier.

A Faster Expansion Cadence and What Came Next

Blizzard signalled at BlizzCon 2023 that the WoW team intended to accelerate the pace of expansion releases. That commitment held: The War Within launched August 2024, and Midnight followed in March 2026, the first time two major WoW expansions shipped within roughly 18 months. For players who followed The War Within's development at the time, this interview captured the moment the Worldsoul Saga's ambitions were first laid out in full.
