Key Takeaways

Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve was the Patch 8.3 (Visions of N'Zoth) legendary cloak, awarded near the end of the 90-minute intro questline that launched January 14, 2020.
The cloak started at Rank 1 (item level 470) and could be upgraded to Rank 15 (item level 500) via one weekly Horrific Vision run per rank.
Rank 6 unlocked Steadfast Resolve — an on-use that dispelled all Corruption effects and granted 6 seconds of immunity. Rank 12 added the Draconic Empowerment proc (+3,500 primary stat for 15 seconds).
Malefic Cores earned from N'Zoth raid kills or full Vision clears added +3 Corruption Resistance beyond Rank 15, capping at 125 total.
The Corruption system was removed entirely when Shadowlands launched in November 2020; the cloak is now obtained purely as a transmog piece.
The questline is account-bound and fully soloable in 2026 — completing it once unlocks cloak access for every character on the account.

Patch 8.3 introduced Ashjra'kamas as Battle for Azeroth's signature power-scaling item — 15 upgradeable ranks, two milestone abilities, and a weekly grind through Horrific Visions that defined the expansion's final tier.

Obtaining Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve

Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve was the legendary cloak introduced in World of Warcraft Patch 8.3 (Visions of N'Zoth), released January 14, 2020. It was account-bound, meaning any character on the account could pursue it once the introductory questline was completed on a single character.

The cloak was awarded near the end of the Patch 8.3 intro questline, which took approximately 90 minutes to complete. The questline began with:

Alliance: "An Unwelcome Advisor" from Magni Bronzebeard in Stormwind
Horde: "Return of the Black Prince" from Wrathion in Orgrimmar

Both questlines concluded at Blackwing Descent, where Wrathion crafted the cloak. The item awarded at completion was Rank 1, starting at item level 470 with 5 Corruption Resistance and 20% Sanity Loss Reduction.

Upgrading the Cloak — 15 Ranks

Ashjra'kamas had 15 ranks, each awarded by completing a weekly quest from Wrathion in the Chamber of Heart in Silithus. Each rank required one entry into Horrific Visions using a purchased Vessel of Horrific Visions. Completing Wrathion's objectives inside the Vision — typically clearing specific areas or achieving score thresholds — advanced the cloak to the next rank.

The full rank progression for item level, Corruption Resistance, and Sanity Loss Reduction was as follows:

Rank	Item Level	Corruption Resist	Sanity Loss Reduction
1	470	5	20%
2	472	12	20%
3	474	12	25%
4	476	20	25%
5	478	20	40%
6	480	20	40%
7	482	27	40%
8	484	27	45%
9	486	35	45%
10	488	35	50%
11	490	42	65%
12	492	42	65%
13	494	42	70%
14	496	50	75%
15	500	50	80%

Upgrading past Rank 15 was possible via Malefic Cores earned weekly from N'Zoth raid kills or full Horrific Vision clears, each adding +3 Corruption Resistance beyond the rank cap up to a hard ceiling of 125 total.

Rank Milestone Effects

Two ranks unlocked additional active and proc effects that changed how the cloak played:

Rank 6 — Steadfast Resolve (on-use): Dispelled all active Corruption effects on the wearer and granted a 6-second immunity to Corruption. 3-minute cooldown. This was a significant survivability tool in Horrific Visions and high-Corruption environments.
Rank 12 — Draconic Empowerment (proc): Chance on ability use to increase the wearer's primary stat by 3,500 for 15 seconds. Synergized with the Heart of Azeroth's Essence system.

The cloak's visual appearance also changed at Ranks 5-6 and again at Rank 12, giving players a visible sign of their progression.

📌 Context for 2026: The Corruption system itself was removed when Shadowlands launched in November 2020. Corruption Resistance and Sanity Loss Reduction on Ashjra'kamas only apply inside Horrific Visions as legacy content. The cloak is still fully obtainable today through the soloable legacy questline and is sought primarily as a transmog piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ashjra'kamas still obtainable in 2026?

Yes. The full Ashjra'kamas questline remains in the game and is fully soloable as legacy content. The cloak is obtainable at Rank 1 by completing the Patch 8.3 intro questline. Subsequent upgrades require weekly Horrific Vision runs, but there is no time pressure since the Corruption system no longer applies to current content. Most players pursue it for the transmog appearance.

How long does the Patch 8.3 intro questline take?

Approximately 90 minutes for a character already at max level with basic gear. The questline is largely linear and involves cutscenes, solo encounters, and a trip to Blackwing Descent where Wrathion grants the completed cloak.

What were Horrific Visions?

Horrific Visions were solo and small-group instanced scenarios set in corrupted versions of Orgrimmar and Stormwind, overrun by N'Zoth's forces. Players spent Vessels of Horrific Visions to enter, had a ticking Sanity meter, and completed objectives for Wrathion to upgrade the legendary cloak. They were the primary weekly progression activity in Patch 8.3.

What is the max item level for Ashjra'kamas?

Rank 15 reaches item level 500. Further Malefic Core upgrades after Rank 15 do not increase item level but do add +3 Corruption Resistance each, capping at 125 total Corruption Resistance. In current WoW content, the item level and stats are legacy; only the transmog appearance carries forward.

What did the Corruption system do in BfA?

The Corruption system in Patch 8.3 added both power and penalties to gear. Corrupted items granted strong offensive effects but applied stacking debuffs at high Corruption totals, including reduced movement speed, reduced healing received, and spawning Manifestations of Corruption. Ashjra'kamas reduced both the penalties and the Sanity drain inside Horrific Visions. The system was removed entirely when Shadowlands launched.
