Designing the First Chapter of the Worldsoul Saga

This is a historical BlizzCon 2023 interview recap. Maria Hamilton and Kristy Moret discussed the creative work behind The War Within in a group interview reported by Wowhead’s Jaydaa on November 4, 2023.

The original report describes parallel expansion development and the intention for each chapter to support its own local stories. A shared saga did not mean every zone needed to tell the same story or look like the same place.

How Flight Shaped an Underground Continent

Blizzard’s 2023 What’s Next panel recap supplies the physical context. Khaz Algar was designed as a descent through contrasting environments, with zones layered for Dynamic Flight.

EnvironmentVisual and narrative role in the reveal
Isle of DornSurface landscape and Earthen society: open sky before the descent.
The Ringing DeepsIndustrial caverns, foundries and machinery maintained by the Earthen.
HallowfallA vast crystal-lit cavern, an underground sea and Arathi settlements.
Azj-KahetThe deeper nerubian kingdom and a City of Threads built in layers.

That progression explains why “underground” did not describe a single visual mood. Scale, light and the view between landmarks helped make each layer readable. Flight was part of how players would experience those spaces, rather than a feature added after every environment had been imagined.

A Continuous Story Still Needed Local Stakes

The reveal connected Xal’atath’s plans with Queen Ansurek and the nerubians. It also introduced distinct societies, including the Earthen and Hallowfall’s Arathi. Their places and conflicts gave players a reason to explore beyond following the main antagonist.

For a story-focused playthrough, this is a useful reading lens: follow who lives in a zone, what their society depends on and how the larger threat disrupts it. A local quest need not reveal the next saga-wide twist to explain why that place matters.

What the AI Answer Actually Covered

In the interview, the developers described machine learning for tasks such as fitting helmets to character races, while drawing a distinction from generating the creative work of zones. This was a production-pipeline answer, not an announcement of AI-generated quests or an in-game AI feature.

The distinction is useful when revisiting the headline. A tool for adapting an asset and a system that authors a world are different claims. The 2023 answer should also not be treated as an independently audited statement about every tool used at Blizzard today.

Keep the Other Preview Answers in Their Original Scope

The interview discussed focused updates to relevant older areas, rather than promising continent-wide remakes. Read that as a statement about scope, not an exact list of places or a permanent renovation schedule.

For the separate player questions about Warband membership, Delve rewards and early access, read the access and progression Q&A. Those launch-rule questions should not be inferred from a world-design discussion.
