A Flight Upgrade Delivered in January 2024
Patch 10.2.5 is a released Dragonflight update, not an upcoming expansion feature. Blizzard’s January 2024 Seeds of Renewal notes confirmed the change anticipated in the earlier Dracthyr Soar announcement: the racial flight ability gained Dragonriding integration.
The news mattered because a Dracthyr could use their own wings with the flight system, rather than treating their racial flight and mounted Dragonriding as separate experiences. The character remained the player’s character; “Dracthyr Soar” was not the name of a mount to collect.
Soar Already Existed Before This Patch
The July 2022 Dracthyr preview had already described Soar as an ability that launches the character into the air. Patch 10.2.5 therefore upgraded an existing racial instead of introducing a new race, class or dragon-riding event.
This distinction changes how to read old headlines. “Full Dragonriding” referred to the integration of a travel system, not a reward for finishing a new racecourse. The exact passives, cooldown and original prerequisites are covered in our Soar upgrade guide.
Two Flight Milestones, on Different Timelines
Seeds of Renewal also expanded mounted Dragonriding to older continents where flight was allowed. That geographic expansion and the Dracthyr racial upgrade arrived together, but answered different player questions: where could you fly, and how did Soar work?
Later in 2024, Blizzard’s War Within pre-expansion update used the name Skyriding, expanded support to many older mounts and enabled Druid Flight Form to use that style. Those later changes should not be moved backward into the 10.2.5 announcement.
