In a surprising announcement made by GM and founder Lozy, the well-known Race to World First contender Big Dumb Guild (BDG) has revealed their decision to disband and retire from competitive raiding. This decision has been attributed to various factors, including a decline in leadership, the loss of core players, and the termination of sponsorship. BDG, known for their impressive performances and a streak of top 10 finishes, will be remembered for their entertaining and competitive approach throughout the world race.
The Reasons Behind the Disbanding of Big Dumb Guild
As stated by Lozy, the decline in leadership has played a significant role in this decision. Both in terms of quality and quantity, the guild has experienced a recent lack of strong leadership. Lozy admitted to losing his personal desire and passion for raiding, contributing to his decision to disband the guild. Coupled with the need to change the officer team twice in the past year, the departure of business partners, and the substantial stress and anxiety experienced since a previous raid, Lozy found himself lacking the necessary motivation to continue.
Additionally, the loss of core players each raid tier due to retirement, burnout, or offers from top-ranked guilds, slowed down BDG's progress and created a constant need for rebuilding. This perpetual rebuilding cycle caused an identity crisis within the guild, leading to a sense of disillusionment among core raiders, who were reluctant to go through the process again.
The loss of sponsorship also played a significant role in the guild's decision. While BDG acknowledged their failure to secure internal financial support, the reality is that the raiding scene requires financial resources that were no longer available to them. This lack of financial support made it difficult for raiders to justify the significant time commitment required for competitive raiding.
The Challenging Journey of the Last Raid Tier
Lozy reflected on the latest raid tier and acknowledged the difficulties they faced during the rebuilding process. Despite enduring several setbacks, including the retirement of key players and the departure of some members a month before the raid, BDG managed to achieve an impressive World 4th finish. Initially, they had hoped to match or surpass this level of performance, but early difficulties with the Smolderon encounter set them on a downward spiral, focusing more on overcoming internal issues rather than mastering the raid mechanics. Nevertheless, Lozy expressed pride in the guild's perseverance and their ability to complete the raid tier.
Expressing Gratitude and Looking Ahead
Lozy concluded the announcement by expressing sincere gratitude to all 295 individuals who have been part of BDG throughout its existence. Recognizing the value of the community built within the guild, Lozy encouraged former members to reach out to reminisce about old days and memorable moments. He also extended his appreciation to the officers and leadership who supported him throughout the guild's journey.
In addition, Lozy thanked the individuals at Golden Guardians who helped make his dream of participating in the RWF a reality. He acknowledged the tremendous effort put in by his analyst team and expressed his hope that they find new opportunities within the scene.
Finally, Lozy expressed his gratitude towards the wider WoW community, particularly those who have supported BDG through tuning into their streams, assisting with crafting, participating in charity events, or simply engaging in enjoyable interactions. He recognized the community's importance and wished everyone success and adventure in their future endeavors.
Looking towards the Future
While Lozy has not yet determined his future direction, he stated that he still possesses a great passion for the game and its community. However, he plans to take a few months off to reflect and explore his options. Whether it be participating in the RWF elsewhere or forming a more relaxed guild with friends in the upcoming expansion, Lozy remains optimistic about his future involvement in the World of Warcraft community.
With heartfelt thanks and best wishes,
Lozy
